Olympics24: France & Spain survive scares before setting up final clash in soccer
Spain has emerged as the best in Europe. In the Olympic gold medal match, France will face Spain.
In the semifinals, France reached the Olympic football final by defeating Egypt 3-1. Despite trailing, France won with two goals from Mateta and another from Michel Olise. On the other hand, Spain defeated Morocco 2-1.
France conceded a goal against the run of play. Mahmoud Saber put Egypt ahead in the 62nd minute. Just as the staunchest French supporters began to fear a loss, the narrative changed. With seven minutes left in the match, Crystal Palace striker Mateta scored to level the score, receiving a pass from Olise. This goal sent the match into extra time. In the 99th minute, Mateta scored his second goal for France. Mateta has now scored four goals in Olympic football. In the 108th minute, Olise scored, sealing the match for France and effectively ending Egypt's hopes.
France last won Olympic gold in football in 1984. Now, 40 years later, they have another chance at gold. Spain last won the Olympic football gold medal in 1992. Only time will tell what will happen this time.
Earlier Spain beat gallant Morocco 2-1 as Juanlu Sanchez came off the bench to fire Spain to a record-equaling fifth Olympic men’s soccer final on Monday.
Sanchez struck in the 85th minute at Stade de Marseille to seal a 2-1 win over Morocco and set up a final against France at the Paris Games.
Morocco led 1-0 at halftime after the tournament’s leading scorer, Soufiane Rahimi, converted a penalty in the 37th.
Spain evened the score in the 65th when Fermin Lopez showed quick feet in the box and hit a left-footed shot low in the bottom corner. The Barcelona midfielder then provided the assist that set up Sanchez to sweep his winning goal into the far corner.
Morocco were distinctly unlucky as they missed several chances and could have reached the final.
