US Open24 : After Alcaraz, Djokovic too crashes out as Popyrin get the best win of his career

A surprising turn of events at the US Open. In just two consecutive days, two stars have exited the final Grand Slam of the year. Carlos Alcaraz was defeated in the second round, and on Saturday, Novak Djokovic's journey ended in the third round. The holder of 24 Grand Slam titles lost to Alexei Popyrin, with the match ending 6-4, 6-4, 2-6, 6-4 in Popyrin's favour.

Saturday's defeat was scripted by Djokovic himself. He had never committed 14 double faults in any previous Grand Slam match. This year, Djokovic and Popyrin faced each other in three Grand Slams. Popyrin had lost to Djokovic at the Australian Open and Wimbledon. After defeating Djokovic at the US Open, Popyrin remarked, "There were battles at the Australian Open and Wimbledon. I had opportunities in those matches but couldn't capitalise on them. This match was different. I seized the opportunity and played well."

Saturday marked one of the biggest wins of Popyrin's career. He said, "I have reached the third round of a Grand Slam at least 15 times, but I had never won. This time, I did it by defeating one of the greatest tennis players of all time. It's unbelievable. My hard work has paid off." This victory was Popyrin's first against Djokovic in four encounters.

Djokovic entered the US Open aiming for his 25th Grand Slam title, with his 100th career trophy within reach. However, the Serbian tennis star will have to wait for those achievements. After losing the first two sets, Djokovic managed to rally in the third but was ultimately defeated in the fourth set, marking the end of his run at the US Open. On the other hand, August has been a remarkable month for Popyrin. He stunned everyone by winning the ATP Masters 1000 in Montreal, a victory that lifted him to 23rd in the world rankings. During that victory, he defeated five players ranked in the top 20. Now, at the US Open, he has taken down the world's number two, Djokovic.

Despite winning gold at this year's Olympics, Djokovic will finish the year without a Grand Slam title. This is the first time since 2017 that he has ended a year without a Grand Slam victory, a stark contrast to last year when he won three Grand Slam titles.

US Open 2024 has proved to be unkind for all the 3 Paris Olympics medal winners . After the exit of top favourites Alcaraz & Djokovic , Musetti who won the bronze in the Olympics also made his exit after a 4 set loss .

Elsewhere , Alexander Zverev advanced to 4th round with a 4 set win. There were wins for top players such as Taylor Fritz, Drimitrov , Rublev , Casper Rudd , Tafoe as they all moved to next round while Ben Shelton made his exit .
