IndvSL : Sri Lanka thrash India in 3rd ODI & win series 2-0
The start was not good for the pair of Gautam Gambhir and Rohit Sharma. India lost the One Day series against Sri Lanka. The first match ended in a tie, and India lost the next two matches. On Wednesday, Sri Lanka won the third One Day match by 110 runs. After 27 years, they defeated India in a bilateral series.
Throughout the series, India's struggle against Sri Lanka's spin bowling was evident. The same scenario was seen in the third match. In this series, India lost a total of 27 wickets to Sri Lanka's spinners, the most in a three-match bilateral series. Indian batters could not stand against Maheesh Theekshana, Jeffrey Vandersay, and Dunith Wellalage.
As in the first two matches, Sri Lanka batted first in this match as well. The two openers, Pathum Nissanka and Avishka Fernando, gave a good start. They handled the Indian pacers well, adding 89 runs together. Nissanka got out after scoring 45 runs. Avishka then partnered with Kusal Mendis for the second wicket. Indian bowlers could not trouble them.
Pacer Mohammed Siraj could not make an impact in this series. He conceded runs in this match too. When the two batsmen were playing, it seemed Sri Lanka would score more than 300 runs. Riyan Parag brought India back into the game. If anything went well for India in this series, it was Parag's form with the ball. He first dismissed Avishka for 96 runs and then sent Mendis back for 59 runs.
Sri Lanka's middle order did not score much. Parag took two more wickets. Eventually, Sri Lanka scored 248 runs for the loss of 7 wickets in 50 overs. They lost their last 6 wickets for 77 runs.
India played with nine batsmen in this match, with Washington Sundar batting at number nine. Despite this, the batting failed. Rohit Sharma played in his usual style while chasing the runs, scoring 35 runs off 20 balls. Virat Kohli scored 20 runs. The rest of the batsmen failed. Shubman Gill (6), Rishabh Pant (6), Shreyas Iyer (8), Axar Patel (2), Parag (15), and Shivam Dube (9) did not score runs.
In the end, Sundar tried to hit a few big shots, but it was too late. After he got out for 30 runs, it did not take long for India's innings to collapse. India was all out for 138 runs in 26.1 overs. Sri Lanka won by 110 runs. Wellalage took 5 wickets, while Vandersay and Theekshana took 2 wickets each for Sri Lanka.
While the T20 series went well for Gambhir as a coach, the One Day series was disappointing. Questions have arisen about the team's mentality. Everyone tried to play aggressively without understanding the situation. Losing to a team like Sri Lanka in this manner will put India under more pressure against stronger teams. Gambhir and Rohit need to correct these mistakes before the next series.
