Olympics24: Neeraj overshadowed by Nadeem settles for silver in javelin
9 August 2024. Three years after his historic achievement, Neeraj Chopra had the chance to replicate his success. He outperformed everyone in the qualification rounds, but unfortunately, he couldn't deliver in the final.
Perhaps the pressure of expectations got to him. Though he didn't win gold, Neeraj still brought home a medal, earning a silver in Paris. Neeraj was overshadowed by Pakistan's Arshad Nadeem. Over the past few years, Neeraj and Arshad have competed in several events together, and Neeraj has mentioned in numerous interviews that Arshad is a friend. However, this time, he had to face defeat at the hands of his friend.
The final in Paris didn't start well for Neeraj. He fell during his first throw, and his foot touched the line, leading to a foul and increased pressure. He needed to perform well in his remaining throws. Arshad Nadeem of Pakistan threw a monstrous 92.97 meters in his second attempt, setting a new Olympic record, which further intensified the pressure on Neeraj. To win the gold, Neeraj needed to surpass his best performance. His second throw was strong, reaching 89.45 meters, his best of the season, but it still wasn't enough for the gold. His third throw was also disqualified. Neeraj's start in the second round was shaky, and his fourth throw was also invalid. The same scenario played out in his next attempt, and it was clear that Neeraj was losing his composure. His final throw wasn't successful either. Arshad's last throw also exceeded 91 meters, securing the gold, while Neeraj finished in second place. Although he didn't win gold, Neeraj made history as the only Indian athlete to win both a gold and a silver medal in the Olympics.
After winning the silver, Neeraj received congratulations from India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, both of whom sent their best wishes via their respective X handles.
