IndvSL : 1st ODI tied as India failed to chase a modest score .
India needed just 231 runs to win. Against a weakened Sri Lankan team, it seemed like an easy victory for Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, and the rest of the Indian squad. However, that was not the case. The first ODI in Colombo ended in a tie on Friday. In the final moments, Shivam Dube and Arshdeep Singh lost their wickets, unable to keep their cool. After the T20 World Cup, Virat Kohli failed to score big for the first time. Rohit Sharma, however, did manage to score a half-century.
Sri Lanka won the toss and chose to bat first but never managed to build a substantial partnership. Arshdeep Singh dismissed opener Avishka Fernando (1) in the third over. Sri Lanka lost their second wicket after nearly ten overs when Shivam Dube sent back Kusal Mendis (14). Sadeera Samarawickrama also failed to score big (8). However, opener Pathum Nissanka scored a half-century (56). Even then, it seemed unlikely that Sri Lanka would reach 200 runs.
Dunith Wellalage played aggressively towards the end, scoring 67 runs off 65 balls with seven fours and two sixes. He was supported by Wanindu Hasaranga (24). Eventually, Sri Lanka finished their innings at 230/8.
India had a good start, with the first wicket partnership adding 75 runs. Shubman Gill was dismissed for 16 runs. Like last year's ODI World Cup, Rohit Sharma started aggressively, sparing no Sri Lankan bowler. He was playing some breathtaking shots and looked in great nick scoring 58 rapidly before being lbw to left arm spun of Wellalage trying to sweep. Kohli, on the other hand, focused on playing steadily but couldn’t stay on the crease for long and got out for 24 runs off Hasaranga's delivery.
In a surprising move, Gautam Gambhir sent Washington Sundar in at number four instead of Shreyas Iyer. This strategy did not work, as Sundar scored just 5 runs off 4 balls. Shreyas, coming in at number five, also failed to make an impact and was dismissed for 23 runs bowled by Fernando . With India at 132/5, they were in a tight spot.
KL Rahul and Axar Patel tried to turn the game around. With a modest target in sight, they focused on steady play and built a partnership of 57 runs. Even after Rahul (31) and Axar (33) got out, it seemed like India could still win, with Shivam Dube at the crease. He accelerated the run rate towards the end, bringing the match under India’s control. However, he lost his nerve and was dismissed while trying an unnecessary shot with 18 balls remaining. Arshdeep Singh performed poorly. With India needing just one run to win, Arshdeep went for a wild shot on the first ball, missed, and was declared LBW after a DRS review.
