Olympics24: USA win womens 4×100mts but mess up in mens event
A mishap during the handoff between Christian Coleman and Kenny Bednarek dashed any hopes of a medal for the U.S. men's 4x100 meters relay team, resulting in the fifth consecutive Olympics where they missed the podium. The team finished in seventh place, but it ultimately didn’t matter as they were disqualified after review. The official reason: their baton exchange occurred outside the designated exchange zone.
Canada claimed the gold medal, with Andre De Grasse delivering a strong final leg. South Africa took the silver, and Great Britain secured the bronze.
In contrast, the U.S. women's 4x100 meters relay team raced to gold on Friday, winning their 12th title in the event. Their success was due to three smooth handovers by Melissa Jefferson, Twanisha Terry, Paris Olympic 200m champion Gabby Thomas, and Sha'Carri Richardson, who completed the race in 41.78 seconds without any major issues.
The British team wasn’t as fortunate. Despite excellent runs by Dina Asher-Smith, Imani Lansiquot, and Amy Hunt, their hopes were dashed when Hunt struggled to pass the baton to Daryll Neita during a downpour at Stade de France. Neita lost her momentum, leaving Richardson with a clear path to the finish line. Richardson celebrated enthusiastically as she crossed the line, and again when the scoreboard, which briefly showed Britain in the lead, correctly reflected the U.S. victory.
