INDvSL : Vandersay takes 6 as India lose 2nd ODI after stunning collapse

India lost to Sri Lanka in the 2nd ODI. The formidable & star studded Indian team was defeated by 32 runs in the second One Day International (ODI). Once again, India's batting lineup collapsed. This was the first loss for the team under Gambhir's captaincy. Sri Lanka's spinner Jeffrey Vandersay took six wickets.

Despite winning the T20 series, India faced issues in the ODIs. The first match ended in a tie. Chasing Sri Lanka's score of 230, India's batsmen failed. On Sunday, Sri Lanka set a target of 240 runs, which India could not reach, ending their innings at 208 runs.

The Indian bowlers must also share the blame for the loss. Sri Lanka was struggling at 136 for 6, but they managed to make a comeback. In the last 15 overs, they scored 104 runs, batting through the full 50 overs. Although opener Pathum Nissanka did not score any runs, his partner Avishka Fernando contributed 40 runs. Kamindu Mendis and Dunith Wellalage made crucial contributions of 40 and 39 runs, respectively, helping their team reach a solid score of 240 runs. It was a team effort by the Lankan batters on a tricky pitch with a few 30s & 40s

Chasing a target of 241 runs, India started well. Rohit Sharma scored a dazzling  64 runs and played breathtaking shots while Shubman Gill added 35 runs. They had a rollicking  partnership of 97 runs and it looked as if India will win under 40 overs . However, Virat Kohli (14) failed to build his innings. He escaped a faulty third umpire decision after being lbw and before long was lbw again to Vandersay and this time there was no escape for the superstar .  Questions arose about the decision to send Shivam Dube (0) at number four and Axar Patel (44) at number five. Even though Axar scored runs, it was puzzling why he and Dube were sent ahead of more established batsmen like Shreyas Iyer (7) and KL Rahul (0).

Sri Lanka's Vandersay made things difficult for India. Brought in place of Wanindu Hasaranga, the 34-year-old spinner seized the opportunity, taking six wickets for 33 runs in 10 overs as he ripped through the Indian star studded middle order . Charith Asalanka took three wickets, and Arshdeep Singh was run out. India's innings ended at a dismal 208 runs.

Sri Lanka now leads the series 1-0, with only one match left. This means India can no longer win the series. The final match is on August 7, and a loss there would be even more embarrassing for India.
