USOpen 24 : Djokovic , Gauff advances , Khachanov loses record longest match
In a dramatic turn of events, Novak Djokovic advanced to the third round of the US Open after his opponent, Laslo Djere, withdrew during the third set. Meanwhile, Wimbledon champion Barbora Krejcikova made an unexpected exit, losing in the second round to Elena-Gabriela Ruse.
Djere, also from Serbia, started strong against Djokovic but ultimately struggled against the seasoned player. Although Djokovic had to work hard to win the first two sets, each ending with a 6-4 scoreline, Djere managed to hit 11 aces compared to Djokovic's three. However, Djere's lack of experience showed, and despite a spirited effort, he found himself trailing 2-0 in the third set before an injury forced him to retire, giving Djokovic a walkover victory.

In a historic clash that broke the record for the longest match in the professional era of the US Open, Britain's Dan Evans triumphed over Russia's Karen Khachanov with a scoreline of 6-7(6), 7-6(2), 7-6(4), 4-6, 6-4 on Tuesday, August 27. The gruelling encounter, which spanned five hours and 35 minutes, featured a stunning comeback by Evans, who overturned a 0-4 deficit in the final set to secure his place in the second round.
In the women's singles, Krejcikova, who recently won Wimbledon, faced an early defeat. From the outset, she struggled to find her rhythm against Ruse, committing numerous unforced errors that ultimately cost her the match. Krejcikova lost the first set 4-6 and put up a fight in the second set, but after Ruse broke her serve, she couldn’t recover, losing the set 5-7 and exiting the tournament.
On a more positive note for the American fans, defending champion Coco Gauff advanced to the third round, defeating Germany's Tatjana Maria in straight sets (6-4, 6-0). Similarly, the women's second seed, Aryna Sabalenka, secured her spot in the next round with a convincing straight-sets victory (6-3, 6-1) over Italy's Lucia Bronzetti.
