Olympics24 : India stun Australia 3-2 in a huge upset in hockey
India's national field hockey team achieved a significant victory in the Olympics, defeating Australia for the first time in 52 years. On Friday, in their final pool match, India triumphed 3-2, with Harmanpreet Singh leading the team to victory. This win comes after the team, which won bronze at the last Tokyo Olympics, had already secured a place in the quarterfinals.
Despite playing well against Belgium on Thursday, Harmanpreet and his team couldn't secure a win, losing 1-2 to the previous gold medalists. Since the beginning of the Olympics, there were questions about the Indian team's performance, as they struggled with field goals and failed to convert penalty corners. Determined to correct their mistakes, the Indian players entered the field on Friday with renewed focus.
From the start, the Indian team displayed an aggressive approach against Australia. Abhishek scored the first goal in the 12th minute, followed by captain Harmanpreet Singh increasing the lead with a penalty corner goal a minute later. India ended the first quarter with a 2-0 lead. In the second quarter, India's offensive pressure intensified. Craig Thomas reduced the deficit for Australia in the 25th minute, ending the second quarter with India leading 2-1.
Harmanpreet scored again at the start of the third quarter, putting India ahead 3-1 in the 32nd minute with a penalty stroke , essentially securing the victory for India. In the 55th minute, Blake Govers scored for Australia, reducing the gap. Desperate to equalize, the previous silver medalists launched several attacks in the final moments of the match but to no avail. The Indian team ultimately emerged victorious with a 3-2 scoreline, marking their first win against Australia in the Olympics since 1972.
