Man City edge out United in sudden death to win FA community shield 2024

 


Manchester City has claimed the first trophy of the season by defeating Manchester United in the Community Shield. The match ended 1-1 in regulation time. Even in the tiebreaker, both teams were inseparable until Manchester United lost in sudden death.


In the first half, neither team managed to score, despite creating several opportunities. Both Manchester clubs squandered their chances. In the second half, Manchester United's Marcus Rashford missed an open goal. However, in the 82nd minute, his team took the lead with a goal from Alejandro Garnacho. Bruno Fernandes found Garnacho with a pass, and he drove the ball into the net with a left-footed strike from outside the box, putting Manchester United ahead.


However, Manchester United couldn’t maintain their lead. Just seven minutes later, Bernardo Silva equalized for Manchester City, forcing the game into a tiebreaker. United's goalkeeper, Onana, saved Silva's first penalty for City, raising hopes that Manchester United might win. But when it was United's turn, Ederson saved Jadon Sancho's shot, keeping City in the game.


The match extended to sudden death, where Manchester United's Jonny Evans missed the target. Manuel Akanji then scored for City, securing the victory and delivering Manchester City their first trophy of the season.
