Varun , Abhishek powers India to crushing 7 wicket win over England in 1st T20I
Returning to white-ball cricket, the Indian team showcased why they are considered among the best in T20 cricket. England, batting first, managed to score only 132 runs, which India chased down comfortably in just 12.5 overs.
Arshdeep's Stunning Start
The foundation of India's win was laid by Arshdeep Singh, who demonstrated why he is the first-choice pacer in T20s. The left-arm pacer struck in his very first over, dismissing Phil Salt for a duck. In his second over, he sent Ben Duckett back to the pavilion, leaving England reeling.
With these early breakthroughs, Arshdeep set a new record, surpassing Yuzvendra Chahal to become India’s highest wicket-taker in T20Is. While Chahal held the record with 96 wickets in 80 matches, Arshdeep now has 97 wickets in just 61 games, making a strong case for his consistency and skill.
Bowlers Dominate England
India’s bowlers shone throughout the innings. Arshdeep, Hardik Pandya, and Axar Patel picked up two wickets each, while Varun Chakravarthy claimed three. Every bowler contributed, be it through early pace, spin in the middle overs, or pace again at the death. Ravi Bishnoi, although wicketless, conceded just 22 runs, showcasing exemplary control.
England’s batting relied heavily on their captain, Jos Buttler, who fought a lone battle. Apart from him, none of the other batters could cross 20 runs, and their innings ended at 132.
Buttler Stands Tall
Jos Buttler, well-versed with Indian pitches due to his IPL experience, adapted to the conditions at Eden Gardens effortlessly. Scoring 68 runs off 44 balls, including several classy strokes, Buttler seemed to be batting on a different surface compared to his teammates. However, his valiant effort was not enough to rescue England.
Abhishek’s Blitzkrieg
India’s chase began with Sanju Samson (26) playing some aggressive shots, while Abhishek Sharma took time to settle and assess the pitch. Once Samson departed, Abhishek unleashed a ferocious assault on the English bowlers.
The Punjab batter smashed 79 runs off just 34 balls, including eight sixes and five boundaries. One of the highlights of his innings was a flicked six off a 153 kmph delivery from Mark Wood, which left the crowd in awe. His dominance ensured that even with Suryakumar Yadav (0) failing to score, India never felt the pressure.
After Abhishek’s departure, Tilak Varma (19*) and Hardik Pandya (3*) completed the formalities, sealing a resounding victory for India.
This commanding performance reaffirmed India’s supremacy in T20 cricket, with both their bowlers and batters delivering in unison.
