Healy , Gardner powers Aus Women to 1st ODI win & 2 points vs England in Ashes
Australia began their 2025 Women’s Ashes campaign with a four-wicket victory over England in the opening ODI at North Sydney Oval, securing the first two points of the series. The win was anchored by a stellar all-round performance from Ashleigh Gardner and a composed 70-run knock by skipper Alyssa Healy. England, put in to bat first, could only manage 204, a target that Australia chased down with 67 balls to spare.
In a vibrant atmosphere, Healy’s decision to bowl first paid off as her bowlers capitalized on England's inconsistent batting. Though Australia wasn’t at their best, England’s frequent errors ensured the hosts remained in control. Kim Garth gave Australia an early breakthrough by dismissing Maia Bouchier cheaply.
England captain Heather Knight attempted to counterattack and shared a steady 50-run partnership with Tammy Beaumont, who played cautiously. However, Beaumont’s dismissal halted their progress. Knight then forged another promising stand with Nat Sciver-Brunt, but England’s inability to convert starts into significant scores became a recurring issue.
The introduction of spin turned the tide in Australia’s favor. Gardner dismissed Knight for 39 after an ill-timed slog sweep and struck again in her next over, removing Sciver-Brunt in a similar fashion.
Australia, however, wasn’t flawless. Ellyse Perry dropped a straightforward catch to give Amy Jones a reprieve. Jones capitalized briefly, scoring a brisk 31 off 30 balls, but eventually fell to Alana King. Danni Wyatt-Hodge also contributed in the 30s but succumbed to a soft dismissal, and England's innings folded with seven overs still remaining.
In their chase, Australia faced early pressure as Phoebe Litchfield fell to Lauren Filer. However, Healy’s aggressive intent, combined with Beth Mooney’s steady 28, saw the hosts regain control through a 61-run partnership. The chase was briefly shaken as Mooney and Annabel Sutherland departed in quick succession, leaving Australia at 124/4.
Healy, displaying remarkable composure, added a crucial 40-run stand with Gardner to take the team closer to the target. She was eventually bowled by Charlie Dean after a commanding 78-ball 70, which included 11 boundaries.
England glimpsed hope when Tahlia McGrath fell with 21 runs still required, but Gardner held her nerve. With an unbeaten 42 off 44 balls, Gardner ensured Australia crossed the finish line, clinching a convincing win in the series opener.
