Australia women secure Ashes with commanding win in 1st T20I vs England
Australia secured the Women's Ashes in decisive fashion with a commanding 57-run victory over England in the first T20 at the Sydney Cricket Ground. The hosts dominated from start to finish, taking an unassailable 8-0 lead in the multi-format series.
Chasing a daunting target of 199, England were bowled out for 141 in just 16 overs, despite a stunning 59 off 30 balls by Sophia Dunkley in her first match of the tour. Dunkley's explosive knock briefly raised England’s hopes, with the team reaching 62-3 during the powerplay and 96-3 by the 10th over. However, a dramatic collapse saw England lose their final seven wickets for just 45 runs.
Australia’s spinners played a pivotal role in tightening the screws. Leg-spinners Alana King (2-14) and Georgia Wareham (3-25) proved instrumental in dismantling England’s middle and lower order.
England’s chase got off to a disastrous start as openers Maia Bouchier and Danni Wyatt-Hodge both departed for ducks within the first two overs. Dunkley’s fearless batting from number three provided a brief spark, but England’s struggles continued as Nat Sciver-Brunt’s 20 was the next highest score.
England’s bowlers also had an off day, conceding too many runs due to loose deliveries and costly fielding errors. Beth Mooney punished the visitors with an elegant 75 off 51 balls at the top of Australia’s order. England missed two crucial chances to dismiss her early, with Amy Jones dropping her on 16 and a miscommunication between Nat Sciver-Brunt and Charlie Dean allowing another chance to go begging when she was on 23.
Sophie Ecclestone was a rare standout for England, delivering impressive figures of 2-26. However, the rest of the bowling unit struggled, with all other bowlers conceding at an economy rate of over eight runs per over.
The loss leaves England needing to win all their remaining matches to salvage a draw in the series.
