Eduardo Gonçalves de Andrade, famously known as Tostão, was born on January 25, 1947, in Belo Horizonte, Brazil. Renowned for his intelligence, vision, and creativity on the pitch, Tostão was a versatile forward and playmaker who could operate in multiple attacking roles. His ability to read the game, deliver precise passes, and score clinical goals made him a key figure in Brazilian football, especially during the 1960s and 1970s.

Style of Play
Tostão was a left-footed player celebrated for his technical skills, impeccable ball control, and tactical intelligence. He excelled as a deep-lying forward, combining playmaking responsibilities with goal-scoring prowess. Despite his slight frame, he had excellent positioning and could effortlessly link midfield and attack. Club Career
Tostão began his professional career with América Mineiro in 1963 before joining Cruzeiro in 1964. At Cruzeiro, he became a legend, scoring 249 goals in 378 appearances. His partnership with Dirceu Lopes was pivotal in Cruzeiro’s dominance, including their historic 6-2 victory over Santos in the 1966 Taça Brasil final. Tostão later played for Vasco da Gama in 1972 but was forced to retire prematurely in 1973 due to an eye injury.

International Career
Tostão represented Brazil between 1966 and 1972, earning 54 caps and scoring 32 goals. His debut came in a friendly against Chile, and he quickly established himself as a crucial part of the national team. Despite Brazil’s struggles in the 1966 World Cup, Tostão’s performances showcased his potential.

World Cup
Tostão’s crowning achievement came in the 1970 FIFA World Cup in Mexico, where he played a pivotal role in what is widely regarded as the greatest football team of all time. Operating as a forward alongside legends like Pelé, Jairzinho, and Rivelino, Tostão’s unselfish play and tactical acumen were instrumental in Brazil’s triumph. His ability to drop deep, create chances, and link up with his teammates made Brazil’s attack nearly unstoppable.
