Sinner win 2nd Aus open as Zverev's grand slam title wait continues
Last year, he became the first Italian player to win the Australian Open. Despite the calendar turning to 2025, the scene at Rod Laver Arena remained unchanged. Once again, Jannik Sinner emerged as the Australian Open champion. On Sunday, in a one-sided final, the World No. 1 defeated Alexander Zverev in straight sets, securing back-to-back titles at the Australian Open and equaling the legacy of legends like Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic.
Federer and Djokovic are among the few players to have won consecutive Australian Open titles. The Serbian maestro even holds the record for winning the title three times in a row. Federer, on the other hand, achieved this feat twice in his career. The Swiss legend first claimed back-to-back titles in 2006 and 2007, then repeated the achievement in 2017 and 2018. On Sunday, Sinner joined their ranks, becoming the first Italian player to win the Australian Open in consecutive years.
From the start of this year’s first Grand Slam, Sinner displayed impeccable form. He advanced through the quarterfinals and semifinals with straight-set victories. His opponent in the final, Zverev, also showcased good form throughout the tournament. The German star reached the final after Djokovic gave him a walkover in the semifinal. However, Zverev had no answers to Sinner’s powerful game.
Sinner dominated the first set, winning 6-3. Zverev put up a fight in the second set, pushing it to a tiebreaker, but ultimately succumbed. Frustration got the better of him as he smashed his racket several times during the match. By the third set, Zverev appeared fatigued, and Sinner capitalized, sealing the set 6-3 and securing his second consecutive Australian Open title.
