Djokovic, Alcaraz Secure Wins in the Aus Open to get closer to a potential Quarterfinal clash
Novak Djokovic and Carlos Alcaraz emerged victorious on Wednesday at the Australian Open 2025 , further intensifying the prospects of a quarterfinal showdown between the two. Djokovic’s third-round advancement shattered Roger Federer’s longstanding Grand Slam record, while Alcaraz impressed with a swift victory and a unique self-styled nickname.
Until now, Federer held the record for the most Grand Slam wins, with 430 victories. Djokovic broke this record by defeating Portugal’s Jaime Faria 6-1, 6-7, 6-3, 6-2. This win also marked Djokovic’s 17th appearance in the Australian Open third round. Reflecting on his achievement, Djokovic expressed gratitude, saying, “I love this sport and this competition. I give my best every time. Playing in Grand Slams for 20 years has been a privilege. Whether I win or lose, I always play with my heart.”
The Serbian star emphasized the significance of Grand Slams in tennis, calling them the sport's cornerstone. “There’s nothing greater in tennis history than Grand Slams. They inspire young boys and girls around the world. My first memory of tennis was watching a Wimbledon final. Today, I feel fortunate to set a new milestone.”
Despite his win, Djokovic has played consecutive four-set matches in the tournament. In the first round, he defeated Nishioka Basborreddi in four sets, and in this match, he dropped the second set. However, he managed to secure victory within three hours and commended Faria’s serve and strong forehand.
Meanwhile, Carlos Alcaraz dominated Japan’s Yoshihito Nishioka, winning 6-0, 6-1, 6-4 in just 81 minutes. Alcaraz’s powerful performance drew attention, particularly for his impressive 14 aces during the match.
In the women’s draw, top-seeded Aryna Sabalenka advanced to the third round with a 6-3, 7-5 win over Jessica Bouzas. Third-seeded Coco Gauff also moved forward, defeating Jodie Burrage 6-3, 7-5. However, fifth-seeded Qinwen Zheng suffered an upset, losing 6-7, 3-6 to Laura Siegemund.
