Australia Dominates Sri Lanka as Khawaja’s Double Century Leads the Charge

Australia’s batters put on a commanding display against Sri Lanka in Galle, with Usman Khawaja scoring a maiden Test double century, while Steve Smith and Josh Inglis also notched centuries. Their dominance saw Australia declare at a massive 654 runs, leaving Sri Lanka struggling at 44/3 by the end of the day.

Khawaja’s Maiden Double Century

Khawaja registered his first-ever double century in Test cricket, batting for nearly seven and a half hours. He faced 352 deliveries to score a magnificent 232, hitting 16 fours and one six. He was well-supported by Steve Smith (141) and Josh Inglis (102), who helped Australia amass their imposing total.

Smith Reaches 10,000 Test Runs

Smith became the 15th batter in history to surpass 10,000 Test runs and only the fourth Australian to achieve the milestone. His innings lasted 251 balls, during which he shared a record-breaking 266-run partnership with Khawaja for the third wicket. This stands as Australia’s highest third-wicket stand against Sri Lanka, surpassing the previous record of 200 runs set by Adam Gilchrist and Damien Martyn in Kandy in 2004.

Sri Lanka in Trouble

In response, Sri Lanka's top order faltered, with both openers—Oshada Fernando (7) and Dimuth Karunaratne (7)—falling cheaply. Veteran Angelo Mathews (7) also failed to make an impact. At stumps, Dinesh Chandimal and Kamindu Mendis remained at the crease, tasked with stabilizing the innings.

Australia’s bowlers struck early, with Mitchell Starc, Matthew Kuhnemann, and Nathan Lyon each picking up a wicket. With a commanding total on the board, Australia will be aiming to dismiss Sri Lanka quickly on day three and strengthen their grip on the match.
