Rickelton double & Verreyene 100 puts South Africa in strong position vs Pakistan in 2nd test
South Africa displayed remarkable dominance in the first innings of the second Test against Pakistan in Cape Town. Ryan Rickelton led the charge with a brilliant double century, while Temba Bavuma and Kyle Verreynne contributed with centuries of their own. Their stellar performances helped South Africa post a massive total of 615 runs, leaving Pakistan under pressure by the end of the second day.
Rickelton and Bavuma had already made their mark on the first day, with Bavuma scoring 106 before being dismissed, while Rickelton remained unbeaten on 169. On the second day, Rickelton continued his fine form, forging a strong partnership with Verreynne. The South African left-hander proved to be unstoppable for the Pakistani bowlers. Verreynne provided valuable support, and together they put on a partnership of 148 runs.
Verreynne reached his century before being dismissed for 100. However, Rickelton carried on and was joined by Marco Jansen, who showcased his all-round capabilities. Rickelton eventually fell for a magnificent 259, dismissed by Mir Hamza. At that point, South Africa's score stood at 557 for 7, but the lower order continued to pile on the runs.
Jansen and Keshav Maharaj batted in T20-like fashion towards the end, both maintaining a strike rate above 100. Jansen smashed 62 off 54 balls, while Maharaj added a quick 40 off 35. South Africa’s innings finally ended at 615. Pakistan’s bowlers struggled, with four of them conceding over 100 runs. Mohammad Abbas and Salman Agha picked up three wickets each, while Mir Hamza and Khurram Shahzad claimed two apiece.
In reply, Pakistan’s innings got off to a poor start as captain Shan Masood was dismissed by Kagiso Rabada in the very first over. Although Babar Azam remained unbeaten at the close of play, his partners Kamran Ghulam and Saud Shakeel failed to provide stability. At stumps on Day 2, Pakistan were reeling at 64 for 3, still trailing by 551 runs.
Babar (31*) who opened in place of injured Saim Ayub and Mohammad Rizwan (9*) are at the crease, and Pakistan will be banking on their experienced duo to mount a comeback. The third day promises to be a crucial one as Pakistan fights to narrow the massive deficit.
