Rickelton , Bavuma sparkling 100s puts South Africa ahead in 2nd test day 1 vs Pakistan
South Africa, already securing a spot in the World Test Championship (WTC) final, has taken a significant step towards a clean sweep against Pakistan. On the first day of the second Test, the host team displayed an explosive batting performance, setting the stage for a formidable total. Opener Rickleton and captain Temba Bavuma stitched a solid 235-run partnership, steering their team to a commanding position. By stumps, South Africa had scored 316 runs for the loss of 4 wickets in 80 overs.
The second Test between South Africa and Pakistan commenced on Friday, January 3, in Cape Town. Winning the toss, South African captain Temba Bavuma opted to bat first. Openers Ryan Rickelton and Aiden Markram provided a 61-run start before Markram fell for 17 runs. Following his dismissal, Wiaan Mulder (5) and Tristan Stubbs (0) were dismissed in quick succession.
Pakistan tried to exert pressure by reducing South Africa to 72/3, but Rickelton and Bavuma thwarted their plans with spectacular centuries. Their partnership propelled South Africa to 307 runs before Bavuma was dismissed after scoring 106 runs off 179 balls, marking his fourth Test century.
Rickelton remained unbeaten at stumps, having scored a stellar 176 runs off 232 balls, marking his second Test century. He previously scored 113 against Sri Lanka in the first Test. This match also saw him surpass the milestone of 500 Test career runs, achieved in his 10th Test match.
Notably, South Africa has already qualified for the WTC final. They defeated Pakistan by two wickets in the first Test and currently lead the two-match series 1-0. Meanwhile, the race for the second spot in the WTC final is between India, Australia, and Sri Lanka, with Australia currently holding the upper hand.
