Sutherland’s Heroics Put Australia in Command in Ashes test as Mooney Eyes Test Century
England were left to rue their missed chances as Annabel Sutherland delivered a stunning innings, while Beth Mooney closed in on a maiden Test century, putting Australia firmly in control on day two of the women's Ashes Test at the MCG.
Sutherland’s remarkable 163 off 258 balls not only secured her place in history as the first woman to score a Test century at the MCG, but also made her just the third Australian woman to register three Test hundreds. Meanwhile, Mooney remains unbeaten on 98, with a golden opportunity to join the exclusive MCG hundred club when play resumes on day three.
Australia ended the day on a commanding 422/5, leading England by 252 runs and inching closer to a historic 16-0 clean sweep in the multi-format Ashes series.
Sutherland’s brilliant knock thrilled the 11,918-strong MCG crowd, adding to a record-breaking total attendance of 23,561 over two days—surpassing the previous record of 23,207 at Trent Bridge in 2023.
Throughout Friday’s play, Australia dominated, capitalizing on England’s struggles in the field. Dropped catches and misfields compounded England’s woes as Australia amassed 366 runs in the day, losing just four wickets.
Sutherland, promoted to No. 3 due to concerns over Ellyse Perry’s fitness, resumed on 24 overnight and continued her onslaught, needing just 56 deliveries to move from 100 to 150. However, her hopes of a double century were cut short when Ryana MacDonald-Gay bowled her for 163, ending a superb innings that featured 21 fours and a six.
Australia’s dominance was further bolstered by valuable contributions from Phoebe Litchfield (45), Ashleigh Gardner (44), and Alyssa Healy (35), ensuring they closed the day in a formidable position at 422/5.
As Mooney eyes her milestone on day three, England face an uphill battle to claw their way back into the contest.
