Ausopen2025: Djokovic , Zverev cruise , Alcaraz fight hard to win as top players advance

Novak Djokovic displayed his vintage form in the third round of the Australian Open on Friday, comfortably defeating Tomas Machac of the Czech Republic 6-1, 6-4, 6-4 to advance to the tournament's second week for the 17th time.

The 37-year-old, seeded seventh, had been pushed to concede sets in his earlier matches but left no room for doubt against world number 25 Machac. The Czech managed to secure an early break in the second set, but Djokovic quickly responded, breaking back immediately. After a brief visit from the doctor, the Serbian raised his game, winning three consecutive games, including a remarkable backhand crosscourt winner. Djokovic will face another Czech player, 24th seed Jiri Lehecka, in the fourth round. Should he progress, he could meet Carlos Alcaraz, the reigning French Open and Wimbledon champion, in the quarter-finals.

Carlos Alcaraz, meanwhile, faced a tough battle against Portugal’s Nuno Borges in his third-round match. The Spanish third seed eventually prevailed in four sets, winning 6-2, 6-4, 6-7, 6-4. Alcaraz, who is aiming to complete a career Grand Slam at this year’s Australian Open, initially took control of the match, breaking Borges twice in the first set to wrap it up in just 31 minutes. The second set was more competitive, with Borges holding steady until unforced errors allowed Alcaraz to break in the ninth game and take the set 6-4.

The third set saw Borges push Alcaraz to a tiebreak, capitalizing on errors from the Spaniard to secure the set. However, Alcaraz responded strongly in the fourth, racing to a 3-0 lead and holding his advantage to close out the match in under three hours.

In another match, Alexander Zverev cruised into the fourth round with a dominant display against world number 92 Jacob Fearnley. The second seed remained flawless in the tournament, defeating Fearnley 6-3, 6-4, 6-4. Zverev’s clinical performance ensured he maintained his perfect streak without dropping a set.

Last year’s semifinalist Coco Gauff barely put a foot wrong as she continued her rollicking start to the Australian Open with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Canadian 30th seed Leylah Fernandez to reach the fourth round on Friday.
