Barcelona's Dramatic Comeback Stuns Benfica; Liverpool Maintains Perfect Champions League Run

Barcelona made a remarkable comeback in the Champions League, securing a 5-4 victory over Benfica on Tuesday night. Trailing 2-4 until the last 15 minutes, they displayed exceptional football to claim the win. With this victory, Hansi Flick's men advanced to the Round of 16. Liverpool also booked their spot in the pre-quarterfinals.

In the first half, Benfica’s Vangelis Pavlidis scored a hat-trick. Barcelona’s goalkeeper Wojciech Szczęsny made two significant errors, which added to the early woes. However, two penalties converted by Robert Lewandowski, along with goals from Eric García and Raphinha, salvaged Barcelona's pride and ensured their progression to the last 16.

After the match, Flick said, “It was a crazy game. Benfica played well in the first half, and we made several mistakes. But I must commend my team’s mentality. They always believe in themselves and came back in an unbelievable manner.”

The game saw early drama, with Pavlidis putting Benfica ahead in the second minute. Shortly after, Barcelona earned a penalty when Alejandro Balde was fouled by Benfica defender Tomás Araújo, allowing Lewandowski to equalize. Szczęsny’s first error, a collision with Balde, gifted Pavlidis a chance to tap into an open goal, restoring Benfica’s lead. Another mistake by Szczęsny, where he fouled Kerem Aktürkoğlu in the box, led to Pavlidis scoring his third from the spot, making it 3-1.

Although Raphinha reduced the deficit in the second half, Araújo’s goal put Benfica ahead 4-2. However, Barcelona staged a sensational comeback in the final 15 minutes, sealing the victory.

Meanwhile, Liverpool defeated Lille 2-1 at Anfield. Mohamed Salah gave Liverpool an early lead, which Jonathan David equalized for Lille. Harvey Elliott’s decisive goal secured Liverpool’s win.

Liverpool has won all seven of their matches, leading the table with 21 points. Barcelona stands second with 18 points from seven matches, while Atlético Madrid is third with 15 points. However, clubs like Paris Saint-Germain, Manchester City, and Real Madrid are yet to secure their spots in the Round of 16.
