WPL25: Mumbai Indians edge past Gujarat Giants in a thriller , keeps hopes of direct final qualification alive

Mumbai Indians put up a stellar performance in the Women’s Premier League (WPL) on Monday, defeating Gujarat Giants by 9 runs at the Brabourne Stadium. However, Harmanpreet Kaur’s team fell just short of overtaking Delhi at the top of the table. With one match remaining, they still have a chance to secure a direct spot in the final.

The team finishing at the top of the points table will qualify directly for the final. If Mumbai manages to defeat RCB in their last match, they will secure a direct entry into the final. In that scenario, Gujarat and Delhi, placed second and third, will face off in the playoffs, with the winner advancing to the final. UP Warriorz and Royal Challengers Bangalore have already been eliminated. If Mumbai loses their last match, they will have to play Gujarat in the playoffs.

After losing the toss, Mumbai Indians batted first but suffered an early setback as Amelia Kerr (5) was run out by Ashleigh Gardner. However, Hayley Matthews (27) and Nat Sciver-Brunt (38) built a solid second-wicket partnership. Following Matthews' dismissal, captain Harmanpreet Kaur joined Sciver-Brunt, and together they added 59 runs for the third wicket.

Amanjot Kaur, batting at number six, played a quickfire knock, scoring 27 runs off 15 balls, including three fours and a six. Harmanpreet was the top scorer with 54 runs off 33 balls, hitting nine fours. The skipper showed great touch and looked in sublime form . Towards the end, Yastika Bhatia’s 13 runs off just four balls helped Mumbai post a competitive total. She hit a glorious 6 of left arm spin of  Kanwer

In response, Gujarat struggled from the outset, losing wickets at regular intervals. Key players like Beth Mooney (7), Kashvee Gautam (10), and Ashleigh Gardner (0) failed to make an impact. Even Harleen Deol, who had been one of Gujarat’s most consistent performers, managed only 24 runs. At one point, Gujarat was reeling at 70 for 5. Litchfield (22) started well but she too failed to continue .

However, Bharti Fulmali turned the game around with a sensational knock. She dominated the Mumbai bowlers, hitting one boundary after another. Had she stayed till the end, Gujarat might have pulled off a remarkable win. Fulmali smashed eight fours and four sixes in her blistering 61-run innings off just 25 balls before getting caught by J Komaleni off Kerr’s bowling.

Gujarat needed 13 runs in the final over. On the first ball, Tanuja Kanwar was run out after Hayley Matthews dropped a catch but quickly threw the ball to the bowler, allowing Harmanpreet to complete the run-out. In the end, Mumbai Indians held their nerve to secure a hard-fought victory. Mumbai bowling was as usual very good with Shabnim Ismail taking 2/17 in her 4 overs , Mathews took 2 wickets and Amelia Kerr getting 3/34 to skyrocket to the top of WPL 2025 season wicket taking charts . Harmanpreet for her excellent innings was the player of the match .
