IPL2025: RCB inflicts royal thrashing on CSK , Patidar, Salt , Hazlewood shines

A new captain, a new season, and finally, Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s long wait is over. After defeating Chennai Super Kings at their home ground, Chepauk Stadium, in the inaugural IPL season, Bengaluru had been waiting for another victory there for 17 years. That wait ended in IPL 2025 as RCB, led by new captain Rajat Patidar, secured a commanding 50-run win over CSK in their second match of the season. This marked only the second time in IPL history that RCB has beaten CSK at Chepauk. Additionally, this victory was RCB’s second consecutive win of the season, while Chennai suffered their first defeat in two matches.

RCB Breaks the Chepauk Curse

All eyes were on this contest to see whether Royal Challengers Bengaluru could finally conquer Chennai Super Kings at their fortress. This time, RCB arrived well-prepared and successfully breached CSK’s stronghold. While Bengaluru’s batsmen and bowlers played a crucial role in the victory, Chennai’s poor fielding also contributed significantly to their downfall.

Salt-Padikkal Fire, Followed by Patidar’s Power

Chennai’s captain, Ruturaj Gaikwad, won the toss and chose to field first, seemingly gaining an early advantage. However, RCB’s opening batsman Phil Salt (32 runs off 16 balls) came out aggressively, attacking the CSK bowlers in the first two overs and putting them under pressure. Meanwhile, Virat Kohli (31 runs off 30 balls) struggled to find his rhythm, but the rest of the RCB batting lineup ensured the scoring rate remained high. Devdutt Padikkal (27 runs off 14 balls) also played a short yet explosive innings.

When captain Rajat Patidar began launching big shots, Chennai’s fielding errors proved costly. CSK dropped his catch three times between his scores of 17 and 20, and they paid the price. Patidar capitalized on the chances, smashing 51 runs off just 32 balls. In the final overs, Jitesh Sharma (12 runs off 6 balls) and Tim David (22 runs off 8 balls) added quick runs, with David hammering three consecutive sixes in the last over to propel RCB to a formidable total of 196/6. For Chennai, spinner Noor Ahmad was the standout performer, picking up 3 wickets.

Hazelwood and Bhuvneshwar Dominate the Powerplay

Chennai’s chase got off to a disastrous start as they lost opener Rahul Tripathi (5) early, followed by captain Ruturaj Gaikwad (0) in the second over. Veteran Australian pacer Josh Hazelwood (3/21) used his short-pitched deliveries effectively to dismantle the CSK top order. Soon after, Deepak Hooda (4) also departed, falling victim to Bhuvneshwar Kumar (1/20). By the end of the powerplay, CSK was reeling at 30/3.

From there, RCB’s bowlers continued their dominance. Liam Livingstone (2/28) removed Sam Curran (8), and in the 13th over, Yash Dayal (2/18) struck twice in five balls, clean-bowling Rachin Ravindra (41) and Shivam Dube (19), sealing CSK’s fate. CSK fans anticipated MS Dhoni’s arrival at the crease after the fall of the sixth wicket, but instead, Ravichandran Ashwin was sent in. That move backfired, and Chennai slumped to 99/7.

In the end, Ravindra Jadeja (19) and MS Dhoni (30* off 16 balls) played some attacking shots to reduce the margin of defeat, but Chennai could only manage 146/8 in 20 overs. This marked CSK’s biggest home defeat in IPL history.
