WPL25 : Delhi Capitals blow away RCB to become 1st team to qialify for playoffs

 


Delhi Capitals became the first team to qualify for the Women's Premier League (WPL) playoffs. On Saturday, they secured a dominant 9-wicket victory over Royal Challengers Bangalore Women. This was their fifth win in the WPL 2025 season. Openers Shafali Verma (unbeaten 80 runs) and Jess Jonassen (unbeaten 61 runs) played outstanding innings to lead their team to victory. Delhi Capitals chased down the target with 27 balls to spare. Meanwhile, this was RCB’s fourth consecutive loss.

In their previous WPL match, Delhi Capitals had also defeated Mumbai Indians by nine wickets. They continued this winning momentum against Royal Challengers Bangalore. Shafali and Jess Jonassen forged an unbeaten 146-run partnership for the second wicket in just 77 balls. Shafali smashed a dazzling  80 runs off 43 deliveries, hitting 8 fours and 4 sixes in typically breathtaking style , while Jonassen scored a sparkling 61 runs off a mere 38 balls, including 9 fours and a six. Delhi lost only one wicket, that of skipper Meg Lanning (2). Chasing a target of 148 in 120 balls, Delhi Capitals achieved victory in just 93 deliveries, scoring 151 runs.

Earlier, RCB had posted a total of 147/5, thanks to a crucial innings from Ellyse Perry. Perry helped RCB recover from early setbacks, scoring a glorious 60 runs off 47 balls, which included 3 sixes and 3 fours. Raghavi Bist contributed 33 runs off 32 balls, hitting 2 sixes, while England’s Dani Wyatt added 21 runs. Smriti Mandhana (8) had another failure being caught in the slips off Shikha Pandey. Much was expected from Richa Ghosh (5) but she went cheaply .   For Delhi Capitals, Shikha Pandey and Sri Charani claimed two wickets each, conceding 28 runs apiece. Marizanne Kapp delivered a tight spell with the new ball, taking 1 wicket for just 18 runs.
