WPL25: Mumbai Indians Cruise to Victory in WPL Eliminator, to meet Delhi Capitals in Final
Mumbai Indians secured an effortless win in the Women's Premier League (WPL) Eliminator, defeating Gujarat Giants in a one-sided contest. Batting first, Mumbai posted a formidable total of 214 runs, virtually sealing the fate of the match early on. Despite their efforts, Gujarat Giants could not chase down the target, and Mumbai won the match by 47 runs.
Strong Batting Display by Mumbai Indians
Mumbai's innings started with opener Yastika Bhatia, who started with sparkling spots but ended up scoring just 15 runs before getting dismissed with the team's total at 26. However, from there, Harmanpreet Kaur's side stitched a remarkable partnership. Hayley Matthews and Nat Sciver-Brunt built a solid 133-run partnership, both scoring 77 runs . Matthews reached her 77 off 50 balls playing breathtaking shots all round the wicket after being dropped by the keeper at 5 , while Sciver-Brunt took just 41 deliveries for her 77 and she struck the ball with power and finesse . Gujarat’s bowlers struggled to break their momentum.
After Matthews' dismissal, captain Harmanpreet Kaur came in and played an explosive cameo, smashing a dazzling 36 runs off just 12 balls, including four sixes and two fours. Her late surge helped Mumbai cross the 200-run mark. She was run out on the final ball of the innings.
Gujarat Giants Fall Short in the Chase
Chasing 215, Gujarat Giants crumbled under pressure and were bowled out for 166. They lost early wickets, with three of their batters dismissed within the first 43 runs. The normally reliable Beth Mooney (6), Harleen Deol (8), and skipper Ashleigh Gardner (8) failed to contribute significantly, putting Gujarat in deep trouble.
Although Danielle Gibson (34), Phoebe Litchfield (31), and Bharati Fulmali (30) tried to stabilize the innings, their efforts were not enough to challenge Mumbai's massive total.
Mathews took 3 crucial wickets for Mumbai and took a spectacular slip catch to dismiss Mooney . Amelia Kerr took 2 tickets and Giants had 3 run outs .
Mumbai Indians Set Up Final Clash with Delhi Capitals
Delhi Capitals topped the five-team league stage and had already secured a direct entry to the final. With Mumbai winning the Eliminator, they will now face Delhi in the WPL final. Last season, Royal Challengers Bangalore defeated Delhi to lift the trophy. This time, Delhi will take on Mumbai in a bid to claim the championship.
