Myanmar Earthquake Death Toll Surpasses 1,600; International Aid Mobilized

The death toll from the devastating earthquake in Myanmar has exceeded 1,600, according to the latest reports from the country's military government. As of now, 1,644 people have been confirmed dead, while nearly 3,500 others have been injured. Many remain missing since the earthquake struck on Friday. In Thailand’s capital, Bangkok, at least 78 people are still unaccounted for.

Rescue teams are tirelessly searching for survivors amid the rubble. In Mandalay, Myanmar’s second-largest city, a 30-year-old woman was pulled from the debris of a collapsed residential building on Saturday afternoon. Earlier, the Red Cross had expressed concern that at least 90 people might be trapped inside the building, a fear echoed by Myanmar's junta government.

The earthquake also caused damage in Bangkok, where a 30-story under-construction building collapsed on Friday. At least 10 people have been confirmed dead, while 42 have been rescued with injuries. Rescuers believe that around 15 individuals may still be alive beneath the wreckage, prompting urgent search efforts.

On Saturday afternoon, Myanmar experienced another tremor measuring 5.1 in magnitude, further complicating rescue operations. In response to the crisis, several countries, including India, have stepped in to provide aid. India has already dispatched its first round of relief materials to Myanmar, with more on the way. Additionally, an 80-member team from India’s National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) is being deployed for rescue and relief operations.

China, South Korea, the United States, Iran, Malaysia, and Indonesia are also offering assistance. China is sending an 82-member rescue team, while South Korea has pledged $2 million in humanitarian aid. Malaysia has announced plans to send a 49-member rescue team, and both Iran and Indonesia have expressed their support.

Amid the crisis, former U.S. President Donald Trump has extended his condolences and assured necessary assistance to Myanmar. The Myanmar military government has called for international support in rescue operations.

India has already launched "Operation Brahma" to aid its neighboring country. An Indian Air Force C-130J aircraft has delivered 15 tons of relief materials, including food, blankets, tents, sleeping bags, solar lamps, water purifiers, and essential medicines.

As search and rescue efforts continue, authorities fear that the death toll may rise further in the coming days.
