Real Madrid Defeats Atlético Madrid Once Again in the Champions League via shootout
Atlético Madrid suffered yet another Champions League defeat at the hands of their city rivals, Real Madrid. Despite securing a 1-0 victory at home on Wednesday night, Atlético fell short in the penalty shootout, losing 2-4. However, controversy arose over Julián Álvarez’s penalty kick. Real Madrid will now face Arsenal in the quarter-finals, while Borussia Dortmund and Aston Villa have also advanced to the last eight.
The two Madrid clubs clashed in the Round of 16. Real had won the first leg 2-1 last week, and Atlético’s 1-0 win in the second leg leveled the aggregate score at 2-2. Since the away goals rule no longer applies in the Champions League, the match proceeded to extra time. With no goals scored in the added minutes, the game was decided by a penalty shootout, where Real Madrid emerged victorious.
Atlético took an early lead, with Conor Gallagher scoring in the very first minute. They continued to put pressure on Real Madrid, but goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois made at least four crucial saves to keep his team in the game. In the 70th minute, Real Madrid was awarded a penalty after Kylian Mbappé was brought down in the box. However, Vinícius Jr. squandered the opportunity, sending his shot over the crossbar. Had he converted, the match wouldn’t have required a penalty shootout.
In the shootout, Kylian Mbappé, Jude Bellingham, Federico Valverde, and Antonio Rüdiger all scored for Real Madrid, while Lucas Vázquez’s attempt was saved by Atlético’s goalkeeper. Controversy arose over Julián Álvarez’s penalty, as he slipped while taking the shot, unintentionally making contact with the ball twice—once with his left foot before striking it with his right.
At first, the referee did not notice the double contact, but Courtois appealed immediately. A VAR review confirmed that Álvarez had touched the ball twice, leading to the goal being disallowed. Shortly after, Atlético’s Marcos Llorente missed his shot, giving Real the upper hand. Rüdiger then converted the final penalty to seal Real Madrid’s victory.
After the match, Courtois remarked, “I knew the ball had been touched twice. Atlético was just unlucky today.” Both Real Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti and Atlético coach Diego Simeone admitted they had not seen the incident live. However, Simeone stated, “VAR must have spotted something for them to disallow the goal.”
Meanwhile, Arsenal played out a 2-2 draw with PSV Eindhoven at home on Wednesday but comfortably advanced to the quarter-finals, thanks to their commanding 7-1 victory in the first leg. Borussia Dortmund secured a 2-1 win over Lille, while Aston Villa triumphed 3-1 against Club Brugge.
