WPL 2025: Gujarat Giants Crush UP Warriors by 81 Runs , reaches no 2 in points table

The Women’s Premier League (WPL) 2025 has now moved to Uttar Pradesh, marking the beginning of the third phase of the tournament. The first match of this leg saw UP Warriors face off against Gujarat Giants in Lucknow, where Gujarat completely outclassed the home team. Under the leadership of Ashleigh Gardner, Gujarat posted a formidable total of 186 runs, powered by a sensational unbeaten 96-run knock from Beth Mooney. Their bowlers then delivered a clinical performance, bundling out UP for just 105 runs, securing a massive 81-run victory. With this dominant win, Gujarat surged to second place on the points table, a remarkable turnaround considering they were at the bottom before this match.

UP Warriors, captained by Deepti Sharma, suffered a disappointing defeat in their first home game. Deepti won the toss and opted to bowl first, a decision that initially seemed promising as Gujarat lost opener Dayalan Hemalatha in the very first over. However, Beth Mooney and Harleen Deol turned the game around with a 101-run partnership. Harleen contributed a quickfire 45 off 32 balls before getting dismissed in the 13th over. Meanwhile, Mooney continued her onslaught, smashing 17 boundaries on her way to an unbeaten 96 off 59 balls, steering Gujarat to an imposing total. Her match-winning innings earned her the Player of the Match award.

After the batters set the stage, Gujarat's bowlers delivered a ruthless performance. Captain Ashleigh Gardner handed the new ball to Deandra Dottin, who struck twice in the very first over. The early blows were compounded by Kashvee Gautam and Meghna Singh, who picked up a wicket each during the powerplay, putting UP under immense pressure. At just 36 runs, half the team was already back in the pavilion. The collapse continued, and UP was bowled out for just 105 runs in 17.1 overs. Only Grace Harris (28) stood amongst the ruins as an opener but she could not force the pace . Later Chinelle Henry scored a rapid 28 off 14 balls but it was too late . Other key batters Navgire, Deepti and few others failed to get double digits

Kashvee Gautam was the standout bowler, taking 3 wickets for just 11 runs in her 3-over spell, while Tanuja Kanwar matched her with figures of 3 for 14 in 3 overs. Deandra Dottin claimed 2 wickets, while Meghna Singh and Ashleigh Gardner chipped in with one wicket each. Gujarat’s emphatic victory has now revitalized their campaign in the tournament.
