Sunita Williams and crew return safely to earth after 286 days in Space - video
After a long wait of 286 days, Indian-American astronaut Sunita Williams and her crewmate Butch Wilmore have safely returned to Earth. Their journey back concluded on Wednesday at 3:27 AM IST when SpaceX's spacecraft successfully splashed down in the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of Florida. NASA confirmed that the return was smooth and without issues. Also aboard the spacecraft were NASA astronaut Nick Hague and Russian cosmonaut Alexander Grebunov.
Sunita and her team originally set off for space in June last year. Their spacecraft, the Boeing Starliner, was intended for an eight-day mission to the International Space Station (ISS). However, technical glitches in the spacecraft forced them to stay in orbit far longer than expected. Several attempts were made to bring them back, but each time, the return was delayed. What was supposed to be just over a week in space turned into a nine-month-long mission.
On Tuesday at 10:35 AM IST, SpaceX's Dragon spacecraft undocked from the ISS, carrying Sunita and her team back to Earth. Upon landing in the Atlantic, the U.S. Navy swiftly arrived to retrieve the capsule. Using a hydraulic system, the astronauts were carefully lifted onto a ship. The first to emerge from the Dragon capsule was Nick Hague, followed by Sunita Williams, who stepped out at 4:22 AM IST with a beaming smile. The crew is now en route to Houston’s Johnson Space Center, where they will undergo health assessments before being reunited with their families.
Celebrations have erupted at the Houston Space Center, while excitement has also spread across India. NASA held a press conference at 5:05 AM IST, where Deputy Associate Administrator Joel Montalbano and Operations Coordinator Bill Spetch stated, "Our astronauts have landed safely. Over the course of nine months, they contributed more than 900 hours to 150 different research studies."
This mission marked another milestone in space exploration. Following their departure, a fresh team, including NASA’s Anne McClain, Nichole Ayers, JAXA’s Takuya Onishi, and Roscosmos’ Kirill Peskov, has taken over responsibilities at the ISS. Now, as Sunita and her team return home after an unexpectedly prolonged mission, the world watches in awe at their resilience and achievements.
