WPL25 : Harleen shines as Gujarat Giants Stay in Playoff Race with Thrilling Win Over Delhi Capitals
Harleen Deol's unbeaten 70-run knock guided Gujarat Giants to a thrilling five-wicket victory over Delhi Capitals in the Women's Premier League (WPL) on Friday. The win, achieved with three balls to spare, kept Gujarat Giants in the race for the playoffs. This was their third consecutive victory, taking them to eight points and securing the second spot in the standings. Delhi Capitals currently lead with 10 points.
Batting first, Delhi Capitals posted a competitive total of 177/5, thanks to a brilliant knock by skipper Meg Lanning. She scored 92 runs off 57 balls, smashing 15 fours and a six. She, along with opening partner Shafali Verma (40 runs off 27 balls, including three fours and three sixes), provided a flying start, adding 83 runs for the first wicket in just nine overs.
Chasing 178, Gujarat Giants reached the target in 19.3 overs, losing five wickets. Apart from Harleen's match-winning innings, Beth Mooney also played a crucial role with 44 runs but Hemlata (1) failed again . Towards the end, skipper Ashleigh Gardner (22 off 13 balls) and Deandra Dottin (24 off 10 balls) accelerated the chase to take their team over the line.
Gujarat had an early setback as opener Dayalan Hemalatha fell for just one run in the second over. However, wicketkeeper-opener Mooney (35 balls, six fours) and Harleen (49 balls, nine fours, one six) built a solid second-wicket partnership of 85 runs off 57 balls.
Meenu Mani broke the stand in the 12th over by dismissing Mooney, but Harleen continued her aggressive approach. She added 39 runs in 25 balls with Gardner for the third wicket and later partnered with Dottin for a quick 34-run stand off just 14 balls.
Dottin played a blistering cameo, smashing two fours and two sixes in 10 balls. She took on Jess Jonassen in the 18th over, hitting two fours and a six, but Jonassen dismissed both Dottin and Phoebe Litchfield in consecutive deliveries. However, Dottin’s explosive knock had already made the task easier for Gujarat.
With 16 runs needed off two overs, Kashvee Gautam smashed a six on the final ball of the 19th over, bringing the equation down to seven runs in the last over. Harleen calmly finished the chase, sealing a crucial win for Gujarat Giants.
Earlier, after being put in to bat, Delhi Capitals made a strong start. Shafali Verma was dismissed in the ninth over while attempting another big shot off Meghna Singh, caught at the boundary by Litchfield. However, Lanning remained firm at the crease, continuing her aggressive batting.
The Delhi Capitals middle order failed to as Jonnasen, Jemima & Kapp all fell cheaply causing some concern amongst the think tank .
Among Gujarat Giants' bowlers, Meghna Singh was the most successful, taking three wickets for 35 runs, while Deandra Dottin picked up two wickets for 37 runs.
