540 Indians Rescued from Cyber Crime Syndicate in Southeast Asia
In a major rescue operation, 540 Indian nationals who were lured abroad with fraudulent job offers and forced into cybercrime have been brought back from Thailand and other countries. An Indian Air Force (IAF) flight carrying 283 rescued individuals landed yesterday, while a second flight is set to repatriate the remaining victims from Mae Sot today.
According to Union Minister Bandi Sanjay, at least 42 of those rescued hail from the Telugu states. These individuals were deceived with fake job offers and subsequently sold to fraudulent call centers operating in Thailand, Cambodia, Laos, and Myanmar. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) stated that they were coerced into cyber fraud and other illicit activities in scam centers near the Myanmar-Thailand border.
The rescue mission was made possible with the intervention of the Myanmar army, in coordination with Indian embassies in Myanmar and Thailand. The victims were transported to Mae Sot in Thailand before being flown back to Delhi.
The Golden Triangle Region, where the borders of Thailand, Laos, and Myanmar converge, is known as a hub for cybercrime, with numerous fake call centers running illegal operations. The Indian government has repeatedly issued warnings about such job scams and urged citizens to verify foreign employers through Indian missions, recruiting agencies, and companies before accepting overseas employment offers.
In a related development, authorities arrested Kamran Haider alias Zaidi in Hyderabad last December. He was accused of deceiving young Indians into cybercrime syndicates and carried a reward of ₹2 lakh on his capture.
