WPL25: Delhi Capitals script clinical win over Mumbai Indians to reach top of points table

Delhi Capitals delivered an all-round performance to secure a commanding 9-wicket victory over defending champions Mumbai Indians, taking the top spot in the Women's Premier League points table. Opting to bowl first, Delhi restricted Mumbai to 123/9 in their 20 overs. Jess Jonassen was the standout bowler, taking 3 crucial wickets for just 25 runs in her 4-over spell.

In response, Delhi captain Meg Lanning led from the front with an unbeaten 60 off 49 balls, while Shafali Verma provided an explosive start with 43 off 28 balls. The duo stitched together an 85-run partnership in just 59 balls, setting up an easy chase for Delhi.

Shafali was eventually dismissed by pacer Amanjot Kaur, caught at deep midwicket by Amelia Kerr. She hit four boundaries and two sixes in her quickfire knock. Lanning, on the other hand, returned to form with a fluent innings, striking nine boundaries. Jemimah Rodrigues remained unbeaten on 15 off 10 balls as Delhi chased down the target with 33 balls to spare.

Earlier, Jonassen played a key role in dismantling Mumbai’s batting lineup, dismissing in-form batter Nat Sciver-Brunt, skipper Harmanpreet Kaur, and G. Kamalini.

After winning the toss and electing to bowl, Delhi made an early breakthrough. Mumbai’s openers Yastika Bhatia (11) and Hayley Matthews (22) fell cheaply. Sciver-Brunt continued her good form, stitching a 38-run partnership with captain Harmanpreet (18) for the third wicket. However, Jonassen trapped Harmanpreet LBW in the 11th over, and in the 14th over, she also removed Sciver-Brunt, who handed back a simple return catch.

Sajeevan Sajana gifted an easy catch to Meg Lanning at extra cover off Minnu Mani’s bowling, further denting Mumbai’s hopes. Wickets kept tumbling, and G. Kamalini also failed to anchor the innings, falling to Jonassen in the 18th over when Mumbai were struggling at 104/7.

With no big hitters left to accelerate in the final overs, Mumbai barely managed to cross the 120-run mark, finishing at 123/9, a total that proved too low to challenge Delhi’s dominant batting lineup.
