CT25 : South Africa crush insipid England to top group & reach semis
England had already been knocked out of the Champions Trophy after their previous match, but on Saturday, they suffered another crushing defeat in their final group-stage game. South Africa dominated the match, winning by seven wickets and securing their place in the semifinals as the group toppers with six points from three matches. Australia, finishing second in the group, accumulated four points from three games. Meanwhile, England, led by Jos Buttler, failed to end their campaign on a winning note.
Once a dominant force in white-ball cricket, England's aggressive style had captured the cricketing world’s attention, particularly since their 2019 World Cup triumph. They followed that success with victory in the 2022 T20 World Cup. However, this tournament turned into a nightmare for Buttler’s side. Despite having several star players, England failed to deliver when it mattered the most, suffering three consecutive defeats to make a humiliating exit.
South Africa effectively sealed their semifinal spot by the end of England’s innings. After winning the toss in Karachi, Buttler’s decision to bat first backfired spectacularly. None of the English batters could make a significant impact. Phil Salt (8) hit two boundaries in the first over but was dismissed soon after. Jamie Smith (0) departed in the third over, and England kept losing wickets at regular intervals. Joe Root was the top scorer with 37, but the team never built a substantial partnership. Their scoring rate was also sluggish, and they were bowled out for just 179 in 38.2 overs. Marco Jansen and Wiaan Mulder each claimed three wickets for South Africa.
South Africa didn’t have the best of starts either, losing Tristan Stubbs for a duck. Ryan Rickelton contributed 27, but it was the partnership between Rassie van der Dussen (unbeaten 72) and Heinrich Klaasen (64) that took the game away from England. The pair added 127 runs for the third wicket, ensuring South Africa's comfortable path to victory. With the top spot in the group on the line, both batters played cautiously rather than rushing the chase. Klaasen was dismissed in the 29th over, but David Miller (unbeaten 7) saw South Africa home without any trouble.
