She combined explosive speed with endurance, making her dominant across both sprints and longer sprints.

Szewińska’s international career spanned over two decades, from the mid-1960s to the late 1970s. She competed in five consecutive Olympic Games (1964–1980), winning medals in every one except her last. After retirement, Szewińska became an influential sports administrator, serving on the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and working to promote women’s participation in sports.

She passed away on June 29, 2018, but remains an icon of world athletics and one of the greatest female athletes of all time. Her records and contributions continue to inspire sprinters globally.
