Indian Temples: Shri Kali Devi Temple in Patiala, Punjab

 


The Shri Kali Devi Temple in Patiala, Punjab, is a revered Hindu shrine dedicated to Goddess Kali.  Situated on Mall Road, opposite the Baradari Gardens, this temple is not only a spiritual center but also a testament to the city's rich cultural heritage. 


Introduction

Constructed in 1936 by Maharaja Bhupinder Singh of Patiala, the Shri Kali Devi Temple was established to enshrine a six-foot-tall idol of Maa Kali and the sacred Paawan Jyot, both brought from Bengal.  The temple complex also houses an older shrine dedicated to Shri Raj Rajeshwari Ji, adding to its spiritual significance.  Due to its architectural beauty and historical importance, the temple has been declared a national monument.  


History

Maharaja Bhupinder Singh, known for his devotion and patronage of the arts, was inspired by the Kali temples of Bengal.  He brought the idol of Maa Kali and the eternal flame (Paawan Jyot) to Patiala, establishing the temple as a center of worship.  The temple's architecture reflects a blend of traditional Indian styles, featuring intricate carvings and murals depicting scenes from Hindu mythology.

Spiritual Importance: The temple is a major pilgrimage site, especially during Navratri, attracting devotees from across the country. 

Unique Offerings: Devotees offer mustard oil, lentils, sweets, coconuts, bangles, chunnis, goats, hens, and liquor to the Divine Mother, reflecting diverse traditions associated with Maa Kali worship.  

Community Engagement: The temple serves as a hub for communal activities, including daily langar services, embodying the spirit of service and devotion.

Facilities: Recent plans include the construction of a fully air-conditioned Devotee Hall for senior citizens and the rejuvenation of the temple's sarovar (sacred pond).

6:00 PM – 7:00 PM (Winters)

7:00 PM – 7:30 PM (Summers)

Mata Ji Ki Rasoi (Community Kitchen): Serves daily at 12:00 noon.

  India reached the Olympic hockey semifinals by defeating Britain in a shootout. The match ended 1-1 in regulation time, leading to a shootout where India won 4-2.
