IPL2025 : Gujarat Titans edge out Mumbai Indians on DLS basis in an epic thriller & lead points table

In the 56th match of IPL 2025, Mumbai Indians faced off against Gujarat Titans in a thrilling encounter that kept fans on the edge of their seats. The match, held at Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium, was crucial for both teams in the race to the playoffs. The contest went down to the final over, where Gujarat Titans emerged victorious, continuing their winning streak and climbing to the top of the points table. Gujarat won the match by 3 wickets.

Gujarat Titans won the toss and opted to bowl first — a decision that proved effective. Mumbai lost both their openers early, with the scoreboard reading just 26 runs. However, Will Jacks and Suryakumar Yadav steadied the innings. Jacks played a solid knock of 53 runs off 35 balls, while Suryakumar contributed 35 off 24 deliveries. However just as the hosts were looking good for a 200 plus score , the Gujarat Titans bowlers hit back as a team & rocked the Mumbai middle order as 5 wickets including that of the two set batters, Tilak Varma , Hardik Pandya & Naman Dhir fell in a heap to reduce Mumbai Indians to 123/7 .

Later, Corbin Bosch added 27 runs from 22 balls in the death overs, helping Mumbai reach a slightly more respectable total of 155/8 in 20 overs but still that was well below par in a small ground with favourable batting conditions .

For Gujarat, Sai Kishore was the standout bowler, claiming 2 wickets for 34 runs in his 4 overs. Rashid Khan was economical, giving away just 21 runs and picking up a wicket. Mohammad Siraj, Arshad Khan, Prasidh Krishna, and Gerald Coetzee also chipped in with a wicket each.

At one point, the target seemed well within Gujarat’s grasp, considering the form of their batters. However, things didn’t go as smoothly as expected. Sai Sudharsan departed early, scoring just 5 runs off 5 balls. A decent partnership between Shubman Gill and Jos Buttler followed, but Buttler was dismissed after scoring 30 runs. Sherfane Rutherford contributed 28 off 15 before getting out, and captain Gill fell to Jasprit Bumrah clean bowled  after a gritty 43 off 46 deliveries. Soon Shahrukh Khan too was bowled by Bumrah cheaply as Gujarat Titans looked heading for a rare defeat.

When Gujarat needed 24 runs in the final over, rain interrupted play. Following the break, the target was revised to 15 runs in one over, which Gujarat successfully chased down. Rahul Tewatia remained unbeaten, scoring 11 runs off 8 balls to seal the victory while Coetzee smacked 12 off 6 balls including an invaluable 6 in the final over to take Gujarat to the brink of victory .

Among Mumbai’s bowlers, Trent Boult, Jasprit Bumrah, and Ashwini Kumar were the key performers. Boult took 2 wickets for 22 runs in his 4 overs, while Bumrah gave away just 19 runs and also claimed 2 wickets. Ashwini Kumar also impressed, picking up 2 wickets for 28 runs in his full quota.
