IPL2025 : Rain halts SRH victory march as Delhi gets lucky point
The game, scheduled at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium, could not be completed due to persistent rainfall. As a result, the umpires decided to call off the match, leading to both teams sharing one point each. This abandonment had a direct impact on the playoff race, knocking one team out of contention.
Sunrisers Hyderabad eliminated from the playoff race
With this match ending without a result, Sunrisers Hyderabad have been officially eliminated from the playoff race. The team needed a win at all costs to stay in the competition. However, only one innings was completed before heavy rain disrupted play. Due to this, last season's finalists failed to progress beyond the league stage this year. So far, Sunrisers have played 11 matches and are currently placed 8th on the points table with only 7 points—making it mathematically impossible for them to break into the top 4.
Sunrisers Hyderabad impressed with the ball
In the rain-curtailed match, Sunrisers Hyderabad captain Pat Cummins won the toss and opted to bowl first—a decision that initially paid off. Cummins struck on the very first ball of the match and picked up three wickets in the powerplay, leaving Delhi Capitals struggling at 29/5. However, the middle and lower-order batters showed resilience. Tristan Stubbs, Vipraj Nigam, and Ashutosh Sharma played fighting knocks—scoring 41* (not out), 18, and 41 runs respectively—helping Delhi post 133/7 in their 20 overs.
Given the modest target, it seemed likely that Sunrisers would chase it down comfortably. However, just after the first innings concluded, heavy rain returned, leaving the ground waterlogged. The umpires had no option but to abandon the match. While it was unfortunate for Hyderabad, the result somewhat favored Delhi, who might have otherwise risked losing two points. Delhi now have 13 points from 11 matches and remain in contention for a playoff spot.
