IPL2025: Rains washes out RCB v KKR match , KKR exits from playoffs race
Rain forced the cancellation of the IPL match between Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) and Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR). Not even the toss could be conducted due to persistent rain. With the match abandoned, Ajinkya Rahane and his team’s hopes of making the playoffs have come to an end. Last year’s champions were dealt a heavy blow by the Bengaluru rain, leaving players of both teams confined to their dressing rooms for the entire evening.
As forecasted by meteorologists, the skies over Bengaluru were overcast from Saturday morning. Rain began in the afternoon and continued steadily, preventing the toss from taking place at the scheduled time. Although the rain stopped around 9 PM and ground staff began drying the field, hopes of a shortened match were dashed when it started raining again within 15 minutes. Eventually, after an inspection at 10:20 PM, the umpires officially called off the game. With the match abandoned, KKR moved to 12 points from 13 games, while RCB now have 17 points from 12 matches.
Saturday was also supposed to mark Virat Kohli’s first appearance on the field since announcing his retirement from Test cricket. Many fans had come to the stadium wearing white jerseys with the number 18 in tribute to him, but they too were left disappointed by the washout.
For KKR to remain in playoff contention, it was crucial to win Saturday’s game against RCB, as well as their final league match against Sunrisers Hyderabad. Even with those wins, their qualification would have depended on the outcomes of other matches. With just one point from the abandoned game, their campaign is effectively over.
RCB, on the other hand, would have secured a playoff berth with a win. Now, with points shared, they must wait a bit longer. They have two league matches remaining — against Sunrisers Hyderabad on May 23 and Lucknow Super Giants on May 27. A win in either of those games will confirm their spot in the top four.
Earlier, on May 9, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) had suspended the IPL for a week due to escalating tensions between India and Pakistan. As hostilities eased, matches resumed from Saturday. However, the first game after the nine-day break was unfortunately washed out by rain, leaving players and fans deeply disappointed.
