IPL2025 : Punjab Kings stun Mumbai Indians , reach within top 2 spot in points table

Finally, before the IPL 2025 playoffs, one team has officially secured a Top-2 finish. Against all odds and expectations, Shreyas Iyer’s Punjab Kings sealed their spot by defeating the seemingly stronger Mumbai Indians in a one-sided contest by 7 wickets. In their final league-stage match played in Jaipur, Punjab chased down a target of 185 runs within just 19 overs, thanks to Arshdeep Singh’s brilliant bowling and a powerful counterattack from Priyansh Arya and Josh Inglis. With this win, Punjab climbed to the top of the points table and will now play in Qualifier 1. Meanwhile, Mumbai Indians remain in fourth place and will head into the Eliminator.

In Match 69 of the league stage, played on Monday, May 26, in Jaipur, Mumbai Indians batted first. Rohit Sharma and Ryan Rickelton gave them a brisk start, but neither could play a big innings. Suryakumar Yadav (57) shouldered the responsibility, continuing his excellent season with another fine half-century. However, he received little support from the other end, as no other batter could build a substantial innings. Though Hardik Pandya (26) , Will Jacks (17) , and Naman Dhir (22) added some quick runs, Arshdeep Singh’s final over heroics — giving away just 3 runs and picking up 2 wickets — restricted Mumbai below the 200-run mark.

In response, Prabhsimran Singh and Priyansh Arya attempted a quick start for Punjab, but Prabhsimran (13) fell in the fifth over to Jasprit Bumrah, looking out of rhythm. Given Mumbai’s strong form and lethal bowling attack, many would have thought Punjab’s comeback was unlikely. But Priyansh (62) and Josh Inglis (73) shattered Mumbai’s bowling pride, not only stitching together a big partnership but doing so at an impressive strike rate and with dazzling strokeplay . Both completed their half-centuries during the stand. After their dismissals, skipper Shreyas Iyer (26*)  guided the team to victory, sealing the win with a match-finishing six.

With this victory, Punjab finished the league stage with 19 points from 14 matches, overtaking Gujarat to secure first place, which guarantees them a Top-2 finish. As a result, they’ll play in Qualifier 1 on May 29, giving them two chances to reach the final. However, their opponent in the first qualifier will be determined by Tuesday’s match between Royal Challengers Bangalore and Lucknow Super Giants. If Bangalore wins, they will claim either first or second place and face Punjab. But if Bangalore loses or the match is drawn, Gujarat will stay second, and Bangalore will finish third to face Mumbai in the Eliminator.
