IPL2025 : Brevis , Dube sets up a Dhoni finish as CSK knock out reigning champs KKR
Chennai Super Kings, the first team to be knocked out of IPL 2025, finally brought an end to their losing streak by registering only their third win of the tournament. In a nail-biting encounter at Eden Gardens, CSK defeated defending champions Kolkata Knight Riders by 2 wickets in the final over. With this victory, Chennai not only regained some pride but also virtually knocked KKR out of the playoff race. The win came after four consecutive losses, with spinner Noor Ahmad and young batter Dewald Brevis emerging as the standout performers who turned the game in CSK’s favour.
The match, played on Wednesday, May 7, saw KKR bat first. After losing an early wicket in the second over, Sunil Narine (26) and captain Ajinkya Rahane (48) stabilized the innings with a solid partnership and scored fluently with glorious strokes . However, a sudden collapse followed, and the team lost three more wickets by the time they reached 103. Andre Russell (38) then played a quickfire cameo, hitting some big shots to push the score to a competitive 179. Manish Pandey remained unbeaten on 36 off 28 balls, but his slow strike rate kept the total from going even higher. For Chennai, young spinner Noor Ahmad was the most effective bowler, finishing with figures of 4 for 31.
Chennai’s chase started on a shaky note as they lost the in-form Ayush Mhatre (0) in the very first over. But replacement player Urvil Patel immediately made an impact, smashing a six off just his second ball. Known for scoring the fastest century by an Indian in T20s, Urvil continued his aggressive onslaught, scoring a blistering 31 off just 11 balls to give CSK a flying start. However, KKR bowlers Harshit Rana and Varun Chakravarthy struck back, reducing Chennai to 60 for 5 and putting them on the verge of another defeat.
At this point, young South African batter Dewald Brevis stepped up and launched a counterattack. He particularly targeted Vaibhav Arora, hammering 30 runs in a single over by hitting boundaries off all six deliveries. Brevis brought up his fifty in just 22 balls, reviving CSK’s hopes. After his dismissal at 52 , Shivam Dube (45) chipped in with some big hits to bring the equation within reach. With only 9 runs needed off the final over and just 2 wickets in hand, MS Dhoni stepped up and launched the first ball from Andre Russell for a six. Then, on the fourth delivery, Anshul Kamboj hit the winning boundary to seal a memorable victory for Chennai.
