IPL2025 , Iyer masterclass , Chahal hattrick knocks out CSK as Punjab Kings win

The Chennai Super Kings, once considered invincible at their home ground Chepauk, have officially crashed out of IPL 2025, becoming the first team to be eliminated this season. In a dramatic match held on Wednesday, April 30, at the iconic Chepauk Stadium, Punjab Kings—led by skipper Shreyas Iyer—defeated CSK by 4 wickets, marking Chennai's fifth consecutive home loss and their eighth overall defeat of the season.

Batting first, Chennai posted a competitive total of 191 runs in 20 overs. However, the score could have been even more imposing had Sam Curran received more support from the other batters. CSK lost both openers by the fourth over, reeling at 22/2. Promoted up the order, all-rounder Sam Curran played a scintillating knock of 88 runs off 47 balls, including 9 fours and 4 sixes. He found some support from Ravindra Jadeja (17) and Dewald Brevis (32), but fell short of a century in the 18th over.

Then came a game-changing moment in the 19th over. Shreyas Iyer brought back leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal (4/32), and he delivered an unforgettable over. After dismissing MS Dhoni for 11 on his second ball, Chahal went on to claim a hat-trick by removing Deepak Hooda, Anshul Kamboj, and Noor Ahmed in the final three deliveries of the over. This was the first hat-trick of IPL 2025 and the second of Chahal’s career. Chennai were eventually bowled out for 191 by the end of the 20th over.

Iyer and Prabhsimran Steer Punjab to Victory

Punjab began their chase with a strong start thanks to their opening pair Prabhsimran Singh and Priyansh Arya. After Arya (23) fell with the score at 44 in the 5th over, captain Shreyas Iyer joined Prabhsimran at the crease and anchored the innings. Iyer, who had failed in his last four outings, returned to form with a commanding performance. Prabhsimran continued his good run, smashing a fluent 54. The duo added 72 valuable runs for the second wicket.

Punjab then lost two quick wickets—Prabhsimran and Nehal Wadhera (5)—in successive overs, giving Chennai a glimmer of hope. However, Iyer, in partnership with Shashank Singh (23), quelled that threat with another crucial stand. Iyer brought up yet another half-century, finishing with a fine 72. Despite the late drama, with Shashank, Iyer, and Suryansh Shedge (1) all dismissed in the final three overs, the damage inflicted by Chahal in the first innings proved decisive.

Had CSK managed 10 more runs, the outcome might have been different. Ultimately, Punjab Kings clinched the victory in 19.4 overs, securing their sixth win of the season and continuing their late-season resurgence.
