Neeraj Chopra Finally Crosses the 90-Metre Mark in Javelin Throw in Doha meet - Video

Neeraj Chopra has finally breached the elusive 90-metre barrier in javelin throw. On Friday, at the Doha Diamond League, the Tokyo Olympic gold medallist registered a personal best of 90.23 metres. This was the first time in his career that he crossed the 90-metre mark. However, despite this milestone, Neeraj couldn't clinch the top spot—he had to settle for second place. The winner was Germany's Julian Weber, who threw a stunning 91.06 metres in his final attempt.

Neeraj began the day strong, throwing 88.44 metres in his first attempt, signaling he was in great form. His second throw was a foul, but he came back brilliantly with 90.23 metres in his third attempt, taking the lead and qualifying for the next round. His fourth throw reached 80.60 metres, and the fifth was again a foul. In his final attempt, he managed 88.20 metres. At that point, it seemed like Neeraj was on course to win the event. But the drama wasn’t over—Julian Weber stunned everyone with a last throw of 91.06 metres, overtaking Neeraj. The German later embraced Neeraj and posed for photos together.

Neeraj’s previous best was 89.94 metres, achieved at the Stockholm Diamond League in 2022. He had also thrown the same distance at the Lucerne Diamond League last year. At the Olympics, he managed 89.34 metres but had to settle for silver, with Pakistan’s Arshad Nadeem taking gold with 92.97 metres.

For years, Neeraj had spoken about his desire to cross the 90-metre mark. In multiple interviews, he admitted how hard he was trying but couldn't quite get there. In one such interview, he said, "I’ve been hearing the question ‘When will you cross 90 metres?’ since 2018. A lot has happened since then—injuries, elbow surgery. I was stuck between 88 and 90 metres. But in my heart, I always wanted to cross 90." He even mentioned in a press conference last year that Doha is known for 90-metre throws. Fittingly, it was in Doha that he finally turned that dream into reality.
