IPL2025 : CSK inflict a shocking 83 defeat on Gujarat Titans
Chennai Super Kings kicked off their IPL 2025 journey with a win — and ended it with a brilliant victory as well. In a match played in Ahmedabad, MS Dhoni’s CSK crushed the playoff-qualified and title-contending Gujarat Titans with a dominant 83-run win. However, despite this emphatic result, CSK ended the season in 10th place. This marks the first time in IPL history that Chennai has finished at the very bottom of the points table.
Chennai’s batters went on a rampage
On Sunday, May 25, in the 67th match of IPL 2025, CSK outperformed Gujarat not just in batting, but also in bowling and fielding. Captain MS Dhoni set the tone early by winning the toss and opting to bat first — a decision the batters backed up strongly. The opening pair of Ayush Mhatre and Devon Conway gave Chennai a fiery start, adding 44 runs, with the dazzling Mhatre alone smashing 34 of those.
After that, Conway and Urvil Patel (37) built a solid partnership, pushing the score past 100. Like Mhatre, Urvil also played a belligerent & aggressive innings. Soon, Devon Conway (52) completed a powerful half-century. Providing the finishing touch was young Dewald Brevis, who blazed his way to a half-century in just 19 balls, finishing with a blistering 57 off 23 deliveries, propelling CSK to a massive total of 230. For Gujarat, Prasidh Krishna was the pick of the bowlers, taking 2 wickets.
Gujarat crumbled under scoreboard pressure
Coming off a failed chase of 236 runs against Lucknow Super Giants in their previous match, Gujarat once again struggled with a big target — and this time, the match was effectively decided within the powerplay. By the fifth over, Gujarat had already lost captain Shubman Gill, Jos Buttler, and Sherfane Rutherford, managing only 30 runs. As long as Sai Sudharsan (41) was at the crease, there was a glimmer of hope, but that too ended in the 11th over when Ravindra Jadeja dismissed both Shahrukh Khan (19) and Sudharsan.
With five wickets down for just 86, Gujarat’s defeat was inevitable; the only question left was the margin. In the end, some late big hits from Rashid Khan (12) and Arshad Khan (20) helped reduce the gap slightly. Ultimately, Gujarat was bowled out for just 147 in the 19th over, succumbing to a massive 83-run loss. For Chennai, Anshul Kamboj and Noor Ahmad both picked up 3 wickets each.
Despite this defeat, Gujarat Titans still hold the top spot on the points table — but their chances of staying in the top two are now slim. They will need Royal Challengers Bengaluru to lose their final match to secure second place.
