IPL2025 : KKR beat Rajasthan Royals by 1 Run in Thriller , keep playoffs hopes alive
Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) edged past Rajasthan Royals (RR) in a nail-biting thriller by just 1 run at their home ground, Eden Gardens, on May 4. Batting first, KKR posted a strong total of 206 runs. In response, Rajasthan fell agonizingly short, finishing at 205. The match went down to the final ball, with Kolkata holding their nerve to claim a memorable victory. Andre Russell emerged as the biggest hero for KKR, smashing an unbeaten 57 off just 25 balls. With this win, KKR now has 11 points from 11 matches and keeps their playoff hopes alive.
The clash between Kolkata and Rajasthan proved to be a rollercoaster, keeping fans on the edge of their seats till the very end. Rajasthan needed 22 runs off the last over, with Shubham Dubey and Jofra Archer at the crease. Dubey, batting on 8 off 10 balls, appeared out of rhythm. Vaibhav Arora was handed the responsibility of bowling the final over. He conceded just 3 runs off the first two deliveries. With 19 needed off 4, Dubey suddenly turned the game with a six, four, and another six — bringing it down to 3 needed off the final ball. However, Arora bowled a perfect yorker that Dubey couldn’t put away, managing just a single run. That sealed the game for KKR by 1 run.
Chasing 207, Rajasthan Royals had a poor start, losing opener Vaibhav Suryavanshi in the first over. By the 8th over, they were reeling at 71 for 5, and a heavy defeat looked inevitable. But skipper Riyan Parag reignited hopes with a blistering 95 off 45 balls, sharing a crucial 92-run stand. At one point, Rajasthan looked favorites to win. However, Shimron Hetmyer was dismissed for 29 in the 16th over, and Parag fell in the 18th to Harshit Rana, swinging momentum back to Kolkata.
Russell’s Power Show
Andre Russell was the standout performer for KKR. The team had lost three wickets for 111 by the 13th over. Russell then stitched a vital 61-run partnership with Angkrish Raghuvanshi. Even after Raghuvanshi's dismissal, Russell held the innings together, finishing unbeaten on 57 off 25 balls. Raghuvanshi contributed 44 off 31 deliveries, while Rinku Singh added a quickfire 19 off 6 balls at the end. Opener Phil Salt scored 35 off 25, and skipper Ajinkya Rahane chipped in with 30 off 24.
Bowlers Step Up
KKR's bowlers also delivered under pressure. Vaibhav Arora struck in the very first over, while Moeen Ali dismissed a second batter in the next. Moeen later removed the dangerous Yashasvi Jaiswal (34) in the 7th over. In the 8th, Varun Chakravarthy delivered a double blow, rattling RR’s middle order with wickets of Jurel & Hasaranga bowled with googlies . Though Rajasthan made a strong comeback, KKR’s bowlers held their nerve. Moeen, Harshit Rana, and Varun took two wickets each, while Vaibhav Arora claimed one.
