IPL2025 : Punjab Kings overcame explosive counterattack from RR openers to win by 10 runs
With the return of IPL 2025, fans witnessed a thrilling clash as Punjab Kings defeated Rajasthan Royals by 10 runs. The match, played in Jaipur, saw Punjab post a massive total of 219 runs, thanks to explosive innings from Nehal Wadhera and Shashank Singh. Rajasthan, in response, fell short at 209 runs, undone by the magical spin of Harpreet Brar. With this crucial win, Punjab Kings have moved tantalizingly close to securing a playoff spot.
Rajasthan Royals, already out of the playoff race, had a brilliant start to the match and put Punjab on the back foot within just 19 balls. Tushar Deshpande and Kwena Maphaka struck early blows, dismissing Punjab’s top three batters in quick succession. Despite this dream start, Rajasthan's bowlers couldn’t stop Punjab from reaching a commanding total of 219—largely due to the heroics of Wadhera and Singh.
Deshpande struck in the second and fourth overs, sending the explosive batters Priyansh Arya (9) and Prabhsimran Singh (21) back to the pavilion. Punjab was struggling at 34 for 3 when Nehal Wadhera (70 off 37 balls) steadied the innings with crucial partnerships. Following him, Shashank Singh (59 off 30 balls) took charge, and in the death overs, he joined hands with Azmatullah Omarzai (21 off 9 balls) to smash a whirlwind 60-run stand in just 24 balls. Deshpande remained Rajasthan’s most effective bowler.
To chase down such a huge total, Rajasthan needed a blazing start—and they got it. In the very first over, Yashasvi Jaiswal hammered Arshdeep Singh for 22 runs, while Vaibhav Suryavanshi continued the onslaught. Rajasthan reached 50 in just 17 balls, and the duo added a fiery 76-run partnership in just 4.5 overs. While Jaiswal was scoring all round the wicket with dazzling shots , young 14 year old Vaibhav played his explosive leg side pulls to decimate the Punjab bowling in the powerplay as Rajasthan charged towards the target menacingly . But left-arm spinner Harpreet Brar (3/22) turned the tide in Punjab's favor.
Brar dismissed Vaibhav (40 off 15) in the 5th over and then removed Yashasvi (50 off 25) in the 9th. The wickets of Sanju Samson (20) and Riyan Parag (13) followed soon after, with Brar again claiming Parag, leaving Rajasthan at 144 for 4. Dhruv Jurel (53) then fought valiantly and brought his team close to the target. But with 22 runs needed in the final over, Marco Jansen struck on the second delivery to dismiss Jurel, sealing the match in Punjab’s favor as Rajasthan ended on 209. Brar for his returns of 3/22 was the player of the match .
