IPL2025: Delhi Capitals jolts Punjab Kings chance of top 2 finish in points table , Rizvi shines
After Gujarat Titans and Royal Challengers Bangalore, Punjab Kings too missed a golden opportunity to stake their claim for the top spot before the playoffs. In the match played on Saturday, May 24, in Jaipur, Punjab Kings suffered a 6-wicket defeat at the hands of Delhi Capitals. Powered by brilliant innings from Sameer Rizvi and Karun Nair, Delhi successfully chased down the daunting target of 207 runs in the final over. With this win, Delhi Capitals ended their season on a high, finishing fifth on the points table with a total of 15 points.
This match, which had originally been scheduled for May 8 in Dharamsala but was postponed due to India-Pakistan tensions, was eventually played in Jaipur. While Punjab Kings were in a strong position during the original fixture, their batting again did not disappoint this time. Batting first, Punjab posted a strong total of 206 runs. Although their openers failed, captain Shreyas Iyer scored an excellent half-century (53 runs), and returning Australian all-rounder Marcus Stoinis smashed a rapid 44 runs off just 16 balls. For Delhi, pacer Mustafizur Rahman starred with the ball, picking up 3 wickets for 33 runs while Kuldeep & Vipraj picked 2 each .
Rizvi’s memorable half-century seals the win
In response to the big target, Delhi got off to an aggressive start. Captain Faf du Plessis (23) and KL Rahul (35) launched an immediate attack, giving their team a solid opening stand of 53 runs. Both were dismissed in quick succession, but Karun Nair, who had been out of the playing XI for the past few matches, celebrated his return with a crucial knock of 44 runs that included several sparkling shots , keeping Delhi’s hopes alive. After his dismissal, young batter Sameer Rizvi took charge, playing the best innings of his short IPL career so far. Rizvi smashed his maiden half-century, scoring a belligerent 58 runs off just 25 balls, and guided the team to victory in 19.3 overs.
Despite the result, there was no immediate change in the points table, with Punjab Kings still holding the second spot. However, Delhi’s win dealt a serious blow to Punjab’s hopes of securing the No. 1 position going into the playoffs. Punjab currently sits at 17 points and has one final match left against the in-form Mumbai Indians. If Mumbai wins, Punjab will likely finish in third or fourth place. Even if Punjab manages to defeat Mumbai, they will still need to depend on the outcome of the Bengaluru and Lucknow matches to secure a top playoff spot.
