#IPL2025: Klaasen masterclass destroys KKR as SRH ends season with a win

The IPL 2025 season turned out to be disappointing for both last season’s champions Kolkata Knight Riders and runners-up Sunrisers Hyderabad, as they were both knocked out of playoff contention early. However, in their final match of the season, Sunrisers Hyderabad showcased their full strength and thrashed Kolkata by a massive 110 runs. With this win, Sunrisers wrapped up their campaign on a high, securing their third consecutive victory and finishing sixth on the points table with 13 points. Meanwhile, Kolkata ended their poor season in eighth place with 12 points.

As the season began, so it ended

The season’s conclusion mirrored its beginning for both teams. Kolkata had suffered a crushing defeat in their very first match of the season — and they were unable to change their fortunes by the final game. On the other hand, Sunrisers had made a thunderous start to IPL 2025, putting up a mammoth 286-run total in their opening game, powered by a brilliant century from Ishan Kishan. They repeated the same explosive batting in their last game, posting an astonishing 278 runs, with Heinrich Klaasen delivering a breathtaking century to seal a big win.

Klaasen and Head rip apart KKR’s bowling

Batting first, Sunrisers got off to a blazing start as Travis Head and Abhishek Sharma (32) put up a 92-run stand within just 7 overs. Head (76 runs off 40 balls) and Klaasen then went after Kolkata’s bowlers relentlessly, adding another 83 runs together and taking the team to 175 by the 13th over. From there, it was the Klaasen show — he reached his fifty in just 17 balls and then smashed a century off 37 balls, ending with a spectacular 105 off 39. Sunrisers finished with a colossal 278/3 in 20 overs, the third-highest total in IPL history.

Kolkata would have hoped to mount a similar aggressive response, and Sunil Narine (31) initially showed some intent. But once he fell in the fourth over, the KKR innings quickly unraveled. Their top and middle order collapsed under pressure, as Jaydev Unadkat, Ishan Malinga, and Harsh Dubey each picked up three wickets to dismantle the batting lineup. In the end, Manish Pandey (37) and Harshit Rana (34) played some aggressive strokes to reduce the margin of defeat, but it was too little, too late. Kolkata were bowled out for just 168 in 18.4 overs.
