WT20I WC : West Indies outplay Bangladesh to keep SF hopes alive

 


West Indies secured a comprehensive eight-wicket victory over Bangladesh in their Group B match of the Women’s T20 World Cup on Thursday, thanks to an outstanding performance by off-spinner Karishma Ramharack, who claimed four wickets for just 17 runs. Following this stellar bowling display, their batters chased down the target with ease. This win marked West Indies' second consecutive victory, placing them at the top of Group B with four points and a net run rate of 1.708, significantly boosting their chances of reaching the semifinals.


As a result of this defeat, Bangladesh's net run rate dropped to -0.835. After being put in to bat, Bangladesh managed only 103 runs for eight wickets in their 20 overs. West Indies chased the target in just 12.5 overs, scoring 104 for two. Captain Hayley Matthews was the top scorer for West Indies with 34 runs off 22 balls. Mathews  hit glorious shots on her favoured offside . A limping  Stafanie Taylor contributed 27 runs before retiring hurt, and Shemaine Campbelle added 21 runs. Deandra Dottin finished the match in style with an unbeaten 19 runs off seven balls, hitting two sixes and a four. Dottin's two towering sixes in the 13th over sealed the win for West Indies.


Earlier, Bangladesh's batting line-up struggled once again, as it had in their previous matches. Captain Nigar Sultana was the top scorer with 39 runs, while Dilara Akhter contributed 19. Sobhana Mostary was dismissed for 16 runs. For West Indies, apart from Karishma’s four wickets, Afy Fletcher took two wickets for 25 runs, and captain Hayley Matthews claimed one wicket.


Winning the toss, Matthews opted to bowl first, and Karishma provided a strong start by taking a wicket in each of her first two overs. She first stumped opener Shamima Sultana and then bowled Dilara Akhter for 19, leaving Bangladesh struggling at 33 for two. Sobhana and Nigar briefly steadied the innings with a 40-run partnership for the third wicket, taking the score to 73.


However, Karishma struck again, stumping Sobhana with the help of the wicketkeeper. Tajmin Nahar and Shorna Akter were dismissed quickly, reducing Bangladesh to 75 for five. Ritu Moni became Karishma’s fourth victim after scoring 10 runs. In the final over, West Indies' captain Matthews dismissed her counterpart Nigar, and Fahima Khatun was run out. Bangladesh's innings featured only nine boundaries in total.
