Mehidy's fight in vain as South Africa beats Bangladesh by 7 wkts to take lead in 2 test series
Mehidy Hasan Miraz's valiant effort went in vain. He missed out on a century, and Bangladesh lost the match. On Thursday, in Dhaka's Mirpur Stadium, Bangladesh was defeated by South Africa in the first Test by seven wickets. Kagiso Rabada claimed his first five-wicket haul in Asia, while South Africa secured their first Test win in Asia in 10 years.
Bangladesh started the day at 283/7, but could only add 24 runs for their remaining three wickets. Rabada completed his five-wicket haul by dismissing Naim Hossain in the first over. Mehidy, on the other hand, was fighting alone, inching towards his century. However, Bangladesh lost their ninth wicket when Taijul Islam was caught behind off Wiaan Mulder's delivery. Soon after, Mehidy himself was dismissed for 97.
South Africa required 106 runs to win and began their chase aggressively, mindful of the weather conditions. Aiden Markram struck two boundaries off Taijul in the second over. While Hasan Mahmud kept things tight from his end, Taijul proved to be more expensive.
With the opening partnership contributing 42 runs, Taijul managed to dismiss Markram. However, fellow opener Tony de Zorzi and Tristan Stubbs steadily pushed South Africa towards victory. De Zorzi was dismissed for 41 by Taijul, followed by David Bedingham's quick exit. Yet, Stubbs, who remained unbeaten on 30, along with Ryan Rickelton, guided South Africa to victory.
